This is an original watercolor painting of mitochondria, which are tiny structures found inside most cells. Mitochondria are sometimes called "cellular power plants" because they generate most of the cell's supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), used as a source of chemical energy. They are also involved in a range of other processes, such as cellular differentiation, and the control of the cell cycle. (Thank you, Wikipedia ; )

These particular mitochondria are especially cute, done up in rainbow colors on a yellow background. They remind me of tiger-striped jelly beans. The painting was made using a batik-like technique. I used masking fluid (kind of like runny rubber cement) to make the design, then painted with watercolor. When the paint was all dry, I removed the masking fluid, revealing the white of the paper.

Perfect for your favorite biologist, geneticist, or other mad scientist, or for anyone who likes colorful, abstract art.

Overall size 8 x 10 inches, including white mat and backing board. Standard size for easy framing. Signed.
