I always find these everyday exhibits of life and garments and packaging years ago so interesting!

Did you know that Sear and Roebuck began marketing what they called "Athletic Supporters" in 1902?

A period "undergarment" in its original box, unworn.

The box reads " Boston Athletic Supporter with heat resistant rubber" and "exercise with safety - always wear an athletic supporter", with an illustration of a boy in boxers, an undershirt and...ahem, a supporter.

One long side reads" George Frost Co., Shirley Mass" and "Designed for fit and comfort" with a small illustration of a diving boy. The other long side has a size chart and an illustrated boy bouncing a basketball.

One short side says " worn in every sport" and an illustration of a baseball player. The other side gives the size ion the box ( K39 boys, fits waist 22"-26") and an illustration of a football player.

I don't want to offend anyone by describing the supporter, so if you think you might be, then as they say, "turn off your television!"

It is kind of a beautiful cream weave that, really, a knitwear designer might even want to copy. The top stretches.

There is art in everything, right?
