A pristine, lovely pair of mid century modern, classic white porcelain cups and saucers from Sweden. Part of a dinnerware set called 'Karla', designed in 1955 by Sven Erik Skawonius (1908-1981) for Upsala Ekeby in Karlskrona. Skawonius was a multi-talented designer, painter, illustrator, glass artist and stage designer that was amongst the first artists hired by Upsala Ekeby to make beautiful everyday ware for Sweden - he also worked at Kosta for many years, as well as many other creative endeavors. I love the cup's atomic handles, the slightly stepped base, and the crisp angled rim of the saucer - these subtle design moves are truly unique and give them a very modern feel. They are thin-walled, delicate and in superb, vintage condition, no chips, crazing or cracks - like new. "Upsala Ekeby, Sweden, Karlskrona" is backstamped on each piece. Simplicity, clean lines, classic modernist pair to start your collection or add to it.

This cup and saucer are part of the permanent collection and on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

saucer: 5.5" diameter, 1" high rim
cup: 3" diameter, 2.75" high
