The Bakeneko is an interesting creature in Japanese folk lore. The belief was that if a cat with a long tail lived long enough, was fed in the same place for many years or met some other requirement then it would turn into a Bakeneko, literally "monster cat". As the cat got more power the tail would start to split turning into two tails, in fact since it was thought the tail was the source of power bobtailed cats were usually preferred and most cats with long tails had their tails cut off to prevent them from becoming Bakeneko. Once the tail started to split the cat could change shape and there are many stories of the cat killing it's owner and taking their place.

Not all Bakeneko are bad though, in fact the Manekineko, or "beckoning cat" that is supposed to bring wealth and prosperity is a Bakeneko. The Manekineko was a Bakeneko cared for by a priest in a small temple that had fallen on hard times. One day the cat beckoned the priest over and said that if he made statues of him beckoning and sold them at the temple it would bring the people and the temple prosperity. The priest did and the temple prospered.

-This Bakeneko is a white cat with yellow button eyes and a half split tail wearing an orange and white kimono with red obi. She is made of upcycled white fleece and is stuffed with organic cotton. The kimono is made of a hand painted vintage kimono panel, the gold paint separating the white and orange is a little brittle with age but she can be handled just not played with roughly. The obi is made of a thick ribbon that has been tied with a traditional, casual butterfly knot, since it is traditionally tied this means it is not sewn on. There are many different ways to tie an obi so I made the ribbon the proportionally the traditional length so she's perfect for those that love kimonos as you can retie her obi however you like.

-Both cat and kimono are completely hand sewn, I don't use a sewing machine.

-Measures 1 foot tall (not including the ears)

-Shipping is available worldwide and now offering free shipping for each additional item.

10% of all sales go to the VSPCA in India, they are one of the most effective animal rescue groups I have seen in nearly a decade of animal welfare work.
