Based in Springfield, IL, Park Sherman began making lighters in 1914. Known for their lift arm lighters in the1930s, they began producing quality flip-top lighters in the 1940s. In the 1950s and 1960s, Park Sherman specialized in inexpensive, all-aluminum lighters frequently used for advertising. This World War 2 era PArk is covered in a military green, textured finish specifically designed for military use. The olive drab color was used so soldiers could smoke covertly, reducing the likelihood of light reflecting off a polished metallic finish that could inadvertently disclosing their location in the field. And, the textured finish made the lighter easier to grip and hold in the trenches of battle. The Park Sherman name does not appear on the outside case, but is etched one the side of the firing mechanism and across the wind guard.

I really like the personal, authentic look of this service lighter, especially how the charred metal wind guard melds with the olive crackle finish. The owner's initials "HH" are crudely etched into the crackle finish. I've taken great care to restore this Park without altering its condition. I removed an impacted flint and cleaned the file wheel to bring this service lighter back to good sparking condition. It's now in working, but isn't as responsive as I'd like. It usually takes several tries to light. This can probably be addressed by replacing the wick, but I though it better to keep this piece all original. I've provided high quality photos to offer the best preview of this lighter's condition. Please take a look and feel free to ask any questions.
