Details

Hester Prynne and her daughter Pearl are the wonderful characters from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book The Scarlet Letter. And I made these art dolls after being recommended and reading the book by a very lovely lady that a few of my other dolls now live with.

This wonderful tale leads you through the story of Hester and Pearl from the time of her imprisonment and public shaming for her out of wedlock affair, which resulted in her falling pregnant with Pearl. She refuses to give up the name of the man that was the other half of this shame so that he can also be punished, and the reader quickly learns who this man is. Hester shows tremendous courage facing her exile from society alone with her small child. And although she has the option of just leaving the community she stays to be near the man she loves and suffer the penance the truly feels for what she has done. The odd goings on with those around her, from the cruel doctor that is someone from Hester’s own past in the mother country to the old woman that everyone believes is a witch – The story is full of detail and beautiful imagery.

Hester and Pearl are both dressed in period correct Mid-17th Century outfits with white cotton shifts, stiff stays, bum rolls and petticoats as underwear. Where Hester’s outfit is quite plain and simple, Pearl’s is over the top with decorative details. Pinned to Hester’s breast is the infamous Scarlet Letter, sewn by hand onto silk in red and gold threads; the public sign of her shame, and the symbol of her indiscretion. She keeps the rest of her clothing plain and austere to match her feelings of penance. As the living symbol of what she has done, and the direct result of her affair, Hester dresses Pearl in the best fabrics she can afford, using her incredible skill to decorate her daughter with fine lace trimmed collars and cuffs to go with her embroidered red satin gown.

I've tried to price these dolls as resonably as possible, but they are a large pair of dolls that I would prefer not to split up. If you are just interested in one of them please get in touch.

Hester weighs approx. 280g, and is 50cm tall.
Pearl weighs approx. 120g, and is 36cm tall.
They will be delivered to you securely wrapped and decorated, protected and with contact details; ready to give as a gift, or just because it’s always nice to receive nice parcels.

All my work is unique and authentic; supplied with signed and dated documents. I keep full records of each doll I produce, what inspired me, and when and how they were created. Every doll is individually handmade, and will not be re-created. So every doll has their own, unique, one-of-a-kind personality.

I’m happy to answer any questions you may have if you get in touch using the Contact button on my main shop page or the Ask A Question button on this page

I've bought from this artist before and was thrilled with my dolls so I thought I'd buy some of the little peg dolls - they happen to be not so small and with their gorgeous faces hair and quite intricate outfits I was well pleased - highly recommended - Tara

Shipping

Shipping from United Kingdom
Processing time
Please contact me to find out when this item will be ready to ship
I always try to post out all orders by first class mail, UK Royal Mail service (including international Air Mail) within 48hrs, and get proof of postage for each parcel for my records.
If it's getting close to the holidays please get in touch so I can find out if I can get the item your interested in to you in time

Payments made via PayPal allow me to ship orders as soon as possible. And payments made via Money Order will be held until payment has been received and banked before the order is sent.

I’m happy to upgrade this to priority postage / courier service on request, with a revised postage price agreed, if you would prefer to have a tracking number. And purchase of more than one of my larger sized dolls will be automatically upgraded to priority shipping where possible with no extra charge.

Please note that items shipped outside of the UK may take some time to arrive, so please allow the usual time from the UK for your area / country.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to take responsibility for missing packages, and will be unable to track them unless priority or courier services have been requested. I will, of course, do anything I can to help find the parcel if this does occur.

My dolls are unique, one-of-a-kind creations, and can’t be replaced / remade if they are lost or damaged in transit. Where possible I will do my best to repair any damages, and the purchaser will be responsible for the cost of transit involved.

All my dolls are much stronger than they look, and are packaged very carefully to ensure they arrive in the best possible condition. I check each doll thoroughly before it leaves me, and carefully package each in sturdy gift boxes filled with tissue paper with any loose or dangly bits tied in place with ribbon so that the doll is well protected inside. Each package gets decorated with old book pages from broken and damaged discarded found books, string, lace, and a handmade gift / name tag. Ready to give as a gift, or just because it’s always nice to get things that are wrapped nicely. This is then wrapped in bubble wrap where needed, and paper, with a copy of the receipt and a business card with my full contact details. I don’t put the receipts inside the gift box with the doll so that everything will arrive with you ready to give to a loved one.

All postage is priced according to the size and weight of the artwork being sent. And I have tried to list the postage costs as accurately as possible. The price of postage in the UK changes rapidly, so any big blunders I've made in the price of postage will be refunded. I do try to keep my postage costs as accurate as possible, and update prices regularly in line with changes.

I ship out on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. And always try to leave 24hrs between payment received and posting in case you change your mind.

Due to the Winter Holidays, orders made during Nov / Dec may take longer than usual to get to you. So if you wish to receive your order before Christmas please allow plenty of time for the parcel to reach you.
The UK Postal Service states the last date to ensure parcels reach USA / Canada / Austrailia as 5th December. So I'm afraid that after this date I am unable to ensure that any of my dolls you have purchased as a gift will reach you in time.

UK Bank Holidays may also affect my ability to send orders out within 48hrs, and every effort is made to get all parcels shipped as soon as possible after these days.

Payments

Secure options
  • Pay with Visa
  • Pay with Master Card
  • Pay with American Express
  • Pay with Discover
  • Pay with PayPal
  • Accepts Etsy Gift Cards and Etsy Credits
Etsy keeps your payment information secure. Etsy shops never receive your credit card information.
My preferred method of payment is through PayPal or direct card payment, but I'm happy to accept Money Orders in most circumstances. If you would like to pay for your purchase by MO I’d be grateful if you could contact me either before or at the time of purchase so that I can ensure that you’re happy with my policies concerning these.

Due to the charges made by my bank to process Money Orders, an extra charge of $10 will be charged for making payment this way. This is what my bank charges me and no more, so please make out your order for $10 more than your doll plus shipping. I hope you understand my reasons for this charge as I'm unable to receive payments by Money Order unless this charge applies. There is no charge if payment is made by UK Postal Order as I incur no charges to process these.

If no payment is received within 7 days of the order being placed (unless payment is by MO) I will cancel the transaction unless you can drop me a note to explain the delay and we can come to some sort of agreement.

If you are having any issues with PayPal, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will attempt to assist you in any way that I can.

I'm happy to arrange payment by instalment in most circumstances, so please contact me before purchase if you’re interested in making payments in this way.
Depending on how many instalments you would like to make I will reserve or deactivate the listing so that your purchase remains secure. And an electronic PDF receipt will be issued for each payment so that both of us have a full record of all transactions. All timescales and the number of payments need to be agreed, and I’ll make sure you have my full contact details to make sure you can get in touch in a way that’s easiest to you.

Returns & exchanges

If one of my dolls has arrived damaged I will give a full refund upon receiving the returned item. But I am unable to offer a refund on the cost of postage, or provide payment for any items to be returned to me. These costs must be covered by the purchaser.

I try to photograph all things as fully as possible, and more pictures are available upon request or on my Flickr or Facebook page if you would like to see something in more detail. And you can find a lot of detail on how I make and dress my dolls, as well as information on the people that have inspired them on my Blog.

http://natashamorganartdolls.blogspot.com/

I try to include information in each dolls listing of the inspiration, clothing, history and research behind each in as much detail as I can. But more detail is given on my Blog if you’re interested in reading more.

If you are not happy with your purchase I will be happy to consider a refund in most circumstances, and am happy to offer an exchange on any work, but must ask that buyers take responsibility for the return shipping, and for the shipping costs to send another doll in exchange.

All custom orders will need to be paid for in advance, with a total refund given if you are not happy with the result. Pieces can take up to two months to complete (for larger sizes), and I will send photographs of the finished piece, as well as work in progress if you would like, before posting to make sure that your happy with the results, or to make any small changes that you would prefer.
