This item is an original, signed, watercolor and ink rendering, designed and executed according to historical armorial documents reflecting the original grantee’s family name. Actual design, colors, metals, and devices on paintings will vary as prescribed by history and all designs are researched to insure as accurate a representation of historical coats of arms as possible.

A Short (very much abridged) History Lesson:

Knighthood was originally granted to a warrior by his sovereign in recognition of his fidelity, honor, and skill on the field of battle. His coat of arms would include such symbols of faith, loyalty, courage, and military prowess as were reflected in the character of the original grantee. When displayed during combat on armor, shields, tack, and banners, soldiers could identify, then rally around, their leader. Over time, these coats of arms became recognized household sigils by which family lines, homes, and lands, were identified. They were also used as a “family seal” for business transactions.

While the service in this listing does not guarantee direct lineage to the original grantee, each coat of arms design is thoroughly researched by cross-referencing multiple historic armorial references using such ancestral information as is available from the client. As much as I’d love to do business with absolutely everyone, there are some family names that truly have no heraldic record (regardless of what some fly-by-night companies will tell you). Custom design services are available for those with no historic record. For further information on custom design services, please scroll to the bottom of the page.

Even though each grant was made to a single individual, and not actually to a family line, many people enjoy owning, and privately displaying, a coat of arms historically associated with their family name. In fact, many coats of arms are purchased with the intent to pass along from generation to generation. That being said, there are rules of law that govern the public display of coats of arms according to actual ownership, as a set of arms does not legally belong to an individual simply because the last name is the same. As a result, many businesses and individuals who desire a coat of arms for business purposes, commission an original, custom design to ensure there is no infringement upon the original grant. The listing for this service is for artwork only, custom or historical representation, and does not include genealogical research or arms registration.
