I had this boulder opal shipped directly from the mines in Australia, which helped save some money. Over here, Boulder opals used to be cheap, but no more. If I bought these in NY, I'd pay about the same for just the stone as you pay for this ring, no joke (I've already made that mistake). The stone is of course 100% untreated (and it is not a doublet).

The opal itself is 10x9mm, and the ring band, which is flat, is 5mm wide. I made the ring and bezel by hand to fit the stone. The finish was done with a dremel tool.

I know that Welo (Ethiopian) opal is all the rage lately, but I like the Aussies much better. In the good pieces, there's way more color. This rich dark blue, for example, cannot be found in Welo opals at all, and even regular chrystal opals don't have it. Black opals and Boulder opals are your only choice if you like something like this.

The ring itself is an 8 3/4. You can probably wear it also if you are an 8 1/2. I could have it downsized via lazer - regular soldering is too hot for an opal. But I can't size it up. Changing the size on this ring will cost $10. It takes about a week and will be billed via paypal.

Opal is the birthstone of October.
