Hard to find words adequate to describe this large and heavy (over 7 pounds) jeweler-crafted sterling silver gilded jewelry casket with music box with Ruege mechanism. I think this is Austro Hungarian. The jewel box is covered with gems. snakes, flowers with pearl centers and little figures of tiny naked miners holding lanterns. The centerpiece on the lid is a massive quartz amethyst. There are pearls, more amethyst cabochons, opals of different sizes and types.

There are 2 tiny marks that are very difficult to see along the edge of the box but I believe they are Viennese hallmarks. Possibly French, but I don't think so. The box is 9 inches long, 6 inches wide and 5 1/2 inches high at the tallest point. You will probably never see another one of these anywhere. I haven't and I've been looking for years.

There are several songs played by the Ruege music box.
