~Elegant Vintage English Christening Gown with Fine Embroidery~

Today we are presenting two English Christening gowns...one with lavish hand embroidery and one with late Victorian machine embroidery. Both are lovely...

This first gown is entirely hand embroidered and it has been entirely handmade of the very finest light and airy cotton batiste.

This lovely English gown has been embellished by hand with exceptional embroidery on the bodice (both front and back which is quite unusual). The very pretty sleeves are formed by bands of the same embroidery and there are ruffles ('robings') from the front waist, over the shoulders and down to the back waist, Around the entire of the skirt are 15 bands of truly gorgeous embroidery of tiny spring flowers. At the bottom of the very full skirt (78 inches around at the hem) are tiny scallops. The detail of this gown is wonderfull.

As I mention all the embroidery work is hand done, but really this is hard to imagine. I have taken a close-up of two small areas of the same motif for you to compare. If this embroidery had been done by machine, then of course the two leaves I point out would have to be identical...but they are not. One has been worked very evenly, and the other is, well, almost 'sloppy' in its uneveness, but in an area of about 1/4 quarter of an inch this is hardly noticable! I think the embroiderer must have been tired when she worked this leaf!. If you look carefully at these two photos you will find other tiny differences, but really the overall 'sameness' of the work is quite remarkable.
To the naked eye this embroidery work appears to be absolutely 'perfect' if not 'mechanical'...but what one must remember is that the women who did this work strived for absolute perfection in their work. Often these embroiderers were Sisters in convents who did this work as a way to fund their order but also as a devotion, so that they worked carefully and meticulously.

This gown measures 19 inches around at the underarms and 18 inches around at the slightly raised 'waist' and it has the traditional ties at the back .
This lovely gown measures 38 1/2 inches long from the shoulder to the hem.

Because we cannot assign sizes to these vintage items, please check your measurements carefully. We can say that we believe this gown would likely fit a baby of about 3 to 9 months and perhaps a few months beyond according to body type.

Finally this gown is in superb vintage condition, clean and white. You will find just one tiny and finely made repair hidden in the embroidery at the bottom of the skirt You will have to hunt carefully for this. Other than that I find no other imperfections...no spots, holes, stains or other issues. This gown is in truly exceptional condition.

As always with our gowns, we do suggest that you have a petticoat made to wear under this gown. This would be a simple matter for any good seamstress (a doting grandmother?) and will protect and support the gown as well as giving it 'body'.

This gown will come to you freshly hand laundered using fine French hypoallergenic soap and will be ironed, fresh, clean, white and ready to use.

To my mind this fine English Christening gown is a rare beauty with its truly remarkable and lavish embroidery...and it will surely be treasured as a family heirloom.
