SALE: Reduced to $95, originally $156.

This is one big bead, massive and prehistoric looking. It was made of Mission Granite by Gary Wilson, who found the stone on the shores of Lake Michigan. I have kept this for quite a while because, heavy as it is, it needed a counterweight and I couldn't for the life of me settle on what it should be. Finally I found the perfect solution: attach a solid iron bead to the spring end on the back of the necklace. That, combined with the short length of the necklace's cord, helps to mitigate the weight of the granite and make it a great piece for everyday wear. You still know you have something solid on, but the weight is more evenly distributed. (The weight of the granite and bail are 2.9 oz or 86 grams; the closure/counterweight is 1.1 oz or 32 grams. If you would like, I can add another iron bead in the back as a dangle to balance it even further.)

I love components made from the stones and rocks found in various places; they speak so clearly of the earth and the honest simplicity of found objects. This granite has a pleasing combination of terra cotta red, parchment white, and charcoal grey. Both sides of the stone are pleasing to look at, but one side has a patch of grey in the center that looks just like the smudged patterns created in pit-fired pottery called "fireclouds", so that became its name.

A very simple hammered wire bail was curled around the stone and the leather cord in the shape of an "S". I hammered it on my desert rock anvil and crimped the top down over the leather to so it stays put on the cord. At the closure, the spring ends were formed into a hook-and-eye closure as solid units, and the iron bead was incorporated into the eye side. This bead is forged iron from Nepal, which I was told is the same type of bead used by the shamans of the region, presumably in their regalia. (A cursory search on the web didn't yield any more information, but I expect it's out there.) I sealed the surface of the bead with Renaissance Wax to discourage rust.

The leather cord itself is from Greece and is a hefty 5mm in width. This was given a good treatment with Bick's leather conditioner and cleaner, and you can use the same product to keep it in good condition.

Reminding me of a prehistoric talisman, this necklace has presence and power. I feel strong and fierce when I put it on, like a warrior priestess! There is something very friendly and appealing about the granite, so I would suggest that you sit with it and see what it has to say. Rocks have personalities, and this one feels quite strong, grounded and ancient to me.

Size: 24.5cm from the nape of the neck to the base of the granite bead. The total length of the leather cord with the hook is 49cm. The granite bead is 50mm x 40mm x 22mm.

Care: Rinse in lukewarm water to clean; use a professional conditioner such as Bick's for the leather--find it at your shoe and boot store.

Firecloud will arrive beautifully giftwrapped in a hand-decorated pillow box, along with a handwritten descriptive label.
