A lover of all things vintage, I've been experimenting with original spun cotton ornaments and figures and my patriotic little boy is one of my latest creations. My figures are based on vintage images and he's no exception. Uncle Sam was a popular figure during patriotic celebrations years ago.
Spun cotton ornaments, and figures, were first produced as part of a cottage industry in Germany in the 19th century. Antique spun cottonfigures are highly valued by collectors and there is a growing interest in these collectibles.
Measuring 7 1/2" from the base to the top of his hat, he's made in a traditional manner. Cotton was spun around a wire armature, forming his body. A reproduction face, from a vintage image, was added and then his clothing was designed. His navy blue crepe paper tails, red vest with gold buttons, and striped pants were stitched. A jaunty white crepe paper bow was added along with his striped top hat. He'll be waving his flag as soon as he hears the marching band!
