This book is a truly unique piece. It is a 14 1/4" x 8 7/8" handwritten journal of someone's trip to Switzerland. It consists of 75 pages, usually written on one side, but sometimes on both, of prose and poetry illustrated by cut outs glued on the pages. The handwriting is sepia colored and absolutely exquisite. There are no mistakes, or blot or tears. At first I wondered how the writer could have been so perfect on every page, but on closer inspection, I noticed that there are pages that have been neatly excised from the book. He or she must have removed the pages that he or she didn't like. Anyway, this is a one of a kind piece. I don't know French, but I was assured by someone who does, that the composition is well done just as the actual writing is.
There are several dates in the book that seem to be the dates of landmarks, but there is one dated April 15, 1900 that makes me think it is an indication of the books origin. In addition, the pattern of the inside cover pages is very similar to that on the backs of playing cards from the turn of the century so that makes me think this lovely journal may date back to then.
