This striking, original 6" x 9" cyanotype photograph shows New Mexico's Santuario de Chimayo, located along the "High Road" to Taos, at Christmas. A tiny shrine dating to 1816, it was built on the site of what many believe to be a miracle associated with the crucifix of "Nuestro Señor de Esquipulas". Legend has that the crucifix continually reappeared of its own accord until a chapel was finally built at that very spot. Often called the "Lourdes of the Southwest," El Santuario de Chimayo is also the site of "el pocito," a small pit of Holy Dirt which many people attribute as possessing remarkable curative powers. A Christmas tradition throughout New Mexico, a line of farolitos (often known as "luminarias" south of Albuquerque), or votives inside of paper bags, line the front arch.

The photograph comes unmatted, but will easily fit into a standard 11 X 14" ready-made mat (with the standard 7.5" x 9.5" inside opening.) No expensive custom matting and framing needed! By using this size, the mat will be set back a bit, and you will be able to display the beautiful, brushy edges of the photo as part of the image. Once again, please note that NO MAT is included with the purchase of this cyanotype.

What is a Cyanotype? It's a 19th century photographic process that uses iron
salt solutions applied to paper, with a photo negative or assorted objects laid upon it. When
exposed to sunshine or other UV light and developed in water, voila! BEAUTIFUL unique photos colored a gorgeous Prussian blue. Because they are printed on either blueprint or watercolor paper, they have a soft matte appearance, without the glossy shine of contemporary photographs. Because each photo is hand made, please expect the possibility of slight variations or imperfections – in fact, I sometimes encourage puddles, drips, and noticeable brushwork, only adding to the charm and originality of each photo.

Medium: Cyanotype on acid-free professional artist watercolor paper. Photo has a light coat of protective wax to add depth and protect photo.
