A GOOD LUCK TALISMAN... This ring is made of genuine Elephant Hair, is a Double Band in style wrapped with gold metal. The metal is most likely 14kt yellow gold, most rings of this nature are either silver or gold. The metal did test positive for gold. The ring has had one owner for the last 40 years, has been worn perhaps twice and is in excellent condition. This ring was a souvenir gift from a friend who had traveled to Africa, she was also a jeweler & antique dealer. The Ring is not hallmarked. The hairs are 1.5 mm in width each, meaning they may be from a baby elephant. The gold at its widest measures 5.5 mm. This ring is at least 1970's and could be much older.

Other rings like this are selling for as much or more than a thousand dollars, they have a bit more gold than this ring.

*Please note this ring is not old enough to have come from the Golden British Rule, so no elephants were harmed to make this particular ring.

History of Elephant Hair Rings & Such... From the mid-18th century until the mid-19th century, India was under British rule (or "Raj", in Hindustani). One of the many inhumane practices during the era was tiger hunting. Brits would whoop it up, ride elephants, kill tigers, then have giant glutinous feasts. All of this was photographed extensively, as an extra souvenir, colonials would have jewelry made from their favorite elephant mount's tail hair.

Believed by the Indians to bring good luck, elephant hair was a popular material used as inlays in rings and bracelets in the 1800s. In England of the latter part of the Victorian era, these rings became a popular jewelry item for men.
