This pretty minty-lime colored glass fishing float derives its primary value in the lure of the net. Fully intact, tight and in unusually good condition - as in very good to terrific - this sisal net is one beautiful, rugged creation of mother nature. 'Wintergreen', so named for it's pretty light minty lime color measures 3-1/4" (glass by itself) or 10-3/4" in circumference, including the width of the sturdy vintage net.

*****PLEASE NOTE: THIS ITEM IS ON RESERVE FOR SHISTER1. THANKS FOR LOOKING!*****

This natural fiber was somewhat rare in use on old fishing floats. It's especially uncommon to find one like this which remains not only fully intact, but actually shows some vitality. It is dry, as would be expected, but not nearly as rigid and fragile as most sisal on old floats has become over time.

Sisal is harvested from agave. A native plant of Yucatan, it's found in the Caribbean, in Africa, and Brazil has been a prolific producer of the fiber which is used for making twine, rope, paper, cloth, carpets. And guess what? It just happens to be resistant to salt water damage! This net is an old beauty and in wonderful condition. If treated with respect and care, as in keep it out of water and bright, hot sunlight - it should last a very long time.

Wintergreen was surprisingly difficult to photo. The antique glass is for some reason more reflective and glossy, with greater sheen than I'd expected. It kept bouncing the light about or taking on unwanted reflections in the immediate environment, so there are areas that appear 'cloudy' which - there is no cloudiness in this glass!

The float shows an amazing 'crown halo' on top and a 'band' of glass part way around the equatorial area which 'bends' the light if you angle it just so. These characteristics are lovely in real time. But sure proved to be a challenge to photo. The float is actually prettier than the photos allow for, is what I'm trying to say. It's funny, some of the real old 'dawgs' turn out with the best photos, yet the prettier floats are often temperamental! Wintergreen shows some great swirls as well as light champagne bubbles.

The seal 'button' likely represents a bit of an aberration, unplanned that is. Looks like the intention was a rounded seal. This one is more of an oval, probably by default. It appears about 20% is missing on one side, yet it is smooth and 'finished' with no grazing or actual chips. It's smooth like sea glass and seems it just came up short, and that was the end of it. It shows good placement and obviously remained intact, water tight and did the job over many decades. You may study it in photo #3. If you are a lover of vintage fishing nets, you will appreciate Wintergreen and its rugged vintage sisal net.

Thank you for helping to care for vintage fishing floats which are rapidly being replaced with plastic or synthetic floats.
