May is crab season in the Outer Banks, and suddenly every morning hundreds of crabs can be seen scuttling in and out of their sand caves. A few varieties include a ghost crab (usually more white and yellow when fresh), a lady crab and a mottled purse crab. The crabs shown here are ones I found on the beach and they had long since met their maker, so they were not quite intact. I've since learned the trick of freezing found crab parts, so they stay fresh until painting time. The only downside to that plan would be giving the Hubs quite a shock when he peers into the freezer for a carton of ice cream.
