A little history...

JJ is an abbreviation for The Jonette Jewelry Company. It was started by Abraham Lisker in 1935 under the name 'Providence Jewelry Company' and changed to 'Lisker & Lisker' when his brother Nathan joined the business. They acheived great success with ballerina and Mother of Pearl styles and so, decided to continue with costume jewelry.

They closed their factory during WWII due to government restrictions (i.e. the Luxury Tax). Abraham served for two years in the US Army and then returned to relaunch the company in 1945 under the name of their parents, John and Elta - i.e. Jonette.

Abraham retired in 1972, and his son Gordon became the new head of the company. Gordon began to outsource some of the firm’s production to other companies. In 1986, they registered the name "Artifacts", and used the Roman numerals MCMLXXXVI on jewelry cards. In 1988 they released a Southwestern line with the "Santa Fe" mark, signed “JJ 1988”.

The company used different metals and finishes (including brass, pewter, base metal, sterling silver, enameling and resin) and manufactured thousands of figural and whimsical novelty designs, to date. Best known for their pins, Jonette Jewelry Co. also manufactured jewelry, letter openers, photograph frames, watch straps or bands or bracelets, bookmarks, candle holders and more.

Jonette Jewelry finally closed in 2006, after 62 years as a family owned business. Along with brands like Trifari, JJ brooches remain some of the most highly collectible pieces in modern times.
