*My mom's best friend, Ruta, gave me the wool yarns she used to use to weave traditional Latvian folk costumes. I knew that I had to knit them into something with traditional Latvian symbols, but what???
*When it didn't get above -4 farenheit (-20c) for a few weeks last winter, because I was freezing I designed and knit a few raglan sleeved tunic sweaters to warm me up.
*A knitwear company wanted me to help them mass produce an ethnic knit. I said no, I don't do mass production, but hey, that looks exactly like my raglan sweater knit with my fair isle hat patterns on top. Why re-invent the wheel when its staring me in the face. Thank you!

I use 2 strands of kid mohair, 1 strand of silk and 1 strand of Ruta's wool (did I mention that her son has been a good friend since Latvian summer camp, but our moms only met after they both retired to live near the camp in Michigan). It is super chunky, but very light weight; airy, and soft like fleece. It only weighs 10.5-14oz. (300-400g). Great for travel, I love wearing it with a skirt.

I JUST ADDED THUMB HOLES!!!! The sleeves are super long and with the thumb holes you can keep warm in the evening chill, or you can roll them up or just push them back. Thats me in the photos and I'm super tall so for me and the other long armed girls they are perfect.

I just had Diana (of the shrug) size S and Aija size L or XL try this on and it fit both fine. Aija would like it a bit looser, but said it did not feel tight. Diana looked great, with a loose fit and she loved the looong sleeves. So you see, it shapes itself to fit you, but I call it a:

Size M womens (in Europe that would be a L)

width - 19" (48cm) measured 2cm (1") below the armhole
length - 28" (71cm)
CB to end of sleeve - 33" (84cm) folded in half lengthwise (sleeve cuffs together) I measure from the center of the back to the end of the sleeves at the cuff.

****************I LOVE, love, loooOOOove special orders****************
so if you need another size, or if you want another color convo me. If you tell me what wraps or sweaters are in the colors you like I will let you know if the colors are still available. I can usually knit and ship within a week.

Latvian symbols come from the bronze ages and before. A lot of other ancient cultures have similar symbols, and it shows how we once were interconnected.

The symbols, top to bottom are:
1. Moon cross - for cultivation and protection. Knowledge of the moons influence on crops is vital.
Usiņš - horses pulling the sun
2. Auseklis - the morning star protects from evil, drives away darkness
God in the heavens
3. Mārtiņš - light and fire, two roosters announcing dawn. Martins day is November 10, and celebrates the harvest before the start of winter. The ancient Latvian Thanksgiving in a way.
4. Māra's cross - she is responsible for the material world, fire and bread, her cross was drawn on loafs of bread, and in the ashes of the fireplace.
