Purinton Slip Ware Chartreuse Collection Circa 1940. I visited one of my favorite treasure troves last week and my eyes spun around in my head! I have always loved chartreuse, this Collection of Purinton Slip Ware were in my hands before you could have said, Season 6 of Downton Abbey is being filmed.

Purinton Pottery manufactured a wide variety of hand-painted dinnerware from 1939-1959. Their output was certainly comparable in quality and beauty to that of comparable companies as Stangl, Blue Ridge and Red Wing. Bernard Purinton was working on a new cost effective and efficient casting method, which was patented and called Slip Ware.

If you didn't get the opportunity to take a ceramics class while continuing your education, slip is a mixture of clay in water mixed together to form a creamy consistency. Remember the scene in the Movie Ghost, with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze at her potter's wheel? She was using slip to help build a piece of pottery.

This Collection consists of the following pieces:

6 Snack Sets, the plates measure 8"long X 8 1/2" wide, with a separate section for the cup, refer to photo # 4 . The cups measure 2 1/2' high X 2 3/4" wide, does not include to handle.
The Seven Cup Tea/Coffee Pot measures 8 1/2" high X 9" from spout to handle.
The Open Sugar Bowl measures 3 1/4" high X 4" 1/2 wide measured from handle to handle.
The Creamer measures 3 1/4" high X 4 1/2" wide spout to handle there is a tiny chip, see photo #5.
I included a dime for you to see the actual size of the chip. Unless you look hard, I had passed over it and just discovered it taking my photos. Refer to photo # 5.

The Pattern is called Chartreuse with green flowers and leaves, accented by brown highlights. In time the green of the leaves has faded but that is what the beauty of this Collection is all about, history in the making! There is some crazing inside the sugar bowl and on top of the tea pot lid but in no way does it detract from the visual beauty of this Collection.

Thank you Downton Abbey and Demi Moore, you all helped explain my excitement to my vintage lovers of this wonderful Collection from the 1940's.
