Flying around the barn among the scattered burlap feed bags, this mass of burlap colored stoneware butterflies made their home on the feed room wall. That was definitely the concept when I made this piece that is destined to add a nice flair of country charm wherever it hangs.

Weathered Burlap's background wood is layered in colors of black, brown, white, antique white, pastel silver sage and cream. Once painted, I distressed, crackled, antiqued and stained it to give that great look of old, barn wall wood.

The toasty tan stoneware clay I used has the addition of tiny specs of manganese. When the kiln reaches its 2400 degrees (f), the specs seem to rise to the surface giving the butterflies a chocolate and caramel polka dot design. And with the addition of glaze, the polka dots seem to dance all over the surface. It's such a fun clay and I never know how many or how big the polka dots will be.

Weathered Burlap Butterflies are glazed in a blend of gloss, satin and matter colors, including burlap, sand, tan, creamy white and yellow iron. Two of the satin, creamy white butterflies flushed with a hint of peachy pink, which was such a nice surprise. Prior to the first firing of the butterflies, I stained the wing tips and edges to create a nice and rustic, toasty defined edge during the final firing allowing them to visually pop off their feed room wall background.

The butterflies range in size from small, medium and large. Butterfly size small is roughly 1-3/4 inches long, 1-7/8 inches wide and stand 1-1/4 inches tall from the wood. Size medium is roughly 2-3/4 inches long, 3 inches wide and stands 1-3/4 inches tall from the wood. Size large is roughly 4-1/2 inches long, 4-1/4 inches wide and stands 3 inches tall from the wood.

The overall size, including butterflies, is roughly 11-1/2 inches wide, 12-1/2 inches tall and stands 4-1/2 inches from the wall when hung. The piece includes a back hole for mounting on a nail and my signature on the bottom right corner.

I had so much fun making this piece. I imagined it hanging on a wall of places like a ranch home's kitchen, a cottage sun room, a beach home's bedroom or a lake home's great room. No matter where it hangs, it will be an eye catcher for it's beautiful, simple color scheme and uniqueness.
