French Butter Dish - Celadon and Shino

This striking butter crock is the perfect way to store your butter so that it will remain soft, spreadable and fresh at room temperature.

I made it using white stoneware clay, wheel-thrown and decorated with my original wax-resist technique and slip designs, then dipped in multiple Shino, Celadon and Apple Green glazes and high fired to approx. 2400 degrees Fahrenheit.

There are two parts to the dish: a smaller, cone-shaped piece that sits on a wide base, and a second larger base container. You fill the cone up with butter, put cold water in the larger base container, and invert the cone into the water.

Because butter is basically an oil, it won’t mix with the water. The air/oxygen goes out and the water surrounds the butter keeping it from oxidizing. When you're ready to use it, simply lift the top off , set it on the table and scoop the butter out. To maintain the butter fresh, the water should to be changed every four to five days.

Dimensions are: base 3 1/4" high x 4" wide
cone 2 3/4" high x 4 3/4" wide
