BOWHEAD WHALE (Balaena mysticetus, Order Cetacea) A baleen whale of the Right Whale family. Up to 66 ft., 75-98 tons, lives entirely in the Arctic Ocean. Has the largest mouth and the thickest blubber (20") of any animal. Can stay submerged for up to 40 min. with a massive bony skull that can break through up to 24" of ice to access a breathing hole. Feeds on plankton and krill that it filters through 9 ft. strands of baleen. With a 13-14 month pregnancy, females give birth to 1 calf every 3-4 years. At birth the calf is about 15 ft. long weighting about 2,200 lbs. Once thought to live for 60-70 years, new evidence suggests they may be the longest living animal, living for 150-200 years. Endangered species. Main predator: Man.
