I retrofit these vintage boxes with my own paints* or other art supplies...they're sturdy and make great travel or plein air kits!

These watercolors from the well-known Milton Bradley Company throw me back to my childhood. Sturdy, well-made metal box with a vintage feel. I'm not sure of the date of this set, but I'm guessing mid-40s to mid 1950s, or perhaps older...if anyone knows more, please let me know!

Milton Bradley began in the 1860s, making games, then began manufacturing things for kindergartens when they became popular in the late 19th Century. One of the things they made was a standardized set of paints for children, which they continued to manufacture for decades.

This set has the original primaries plus black.

I came into a cache of these--all the Milton Bradley ones have 4 pans for paint, some in different order. You can pop the paint tray right out and replace with your own pans, or use these to carry your pencils, brushes, or other goodies.

NOTE: the one you buy may not have colors in the order shown.

* The tins are about 8 1/2" x 2". If you want to replace the colors with your own full or half pans, this will give you an idea--of course how many would depend on the configuration you wanted--a single row with room for brushes, or as many as you could fit in.

7 full pans if you're placing them horizontally, across, in a single row, or 10 if you're doing them vertically. You could do a double row of full pans, 10 in one row vertically and a second row of 7 horizontally, or two rows of 7 horizontally placed. And of course double all those figures for half pans!
