Vintage Monarch Stereoscope made by Keystone View Company in 1904. In very good condition. Purchased at an estate sale. These were extremely popular from the 1850's until after World War I. They allowed people to see the world from their parlor. Stereoviews are unique photos. They are taken with a special camera that has dual lenses and shutters. Both pictures are taken at the same time. The lenses are about 2 1/2" inches apart, about the same distance as your eyes, which enables the lenses to record the scene just as your eyes see it, from two different viewpoints. Although the photos each look the same, they're not. Each one is minutely different. Your eyes blend the view and the brain perceives it with the objects standing out in space in real-life perspective. It is amazing to look through one of these and see the 3-D effect and imagine that it was invented so long ago! This is a wonderful piece of history and photography.
