This HUGE setting ( 1 1/2" long) sterling relief ring has a really unusual stone that seems to to have cobalt with hints of green that just pop thru when the light hits it. THanks so a helpful etsier I know now that this is the stone. The centre stone is Larvikite, better known as Black Labradorite, originally discovered in Larvik, Norway. To be specific, this is a type of igneous-rock, or lava, and the flecks of colour are crystals of feldspar (in this case, Perthite, an inter-growth or fusion of two feldspars).

Larvikite is popularly used in building facades due to its sturdy composition, high polish, and sparkle. It's industrial name is Blue Granite, and technically it is in the granite family.

This is a really dramatic HUGE ring that is a size 10 1/2 and it weighs a whopping 11.7 grams of sterling. Yow won't find an antique ring this big and fabulous that is like this because it is obviously hand wrought. THe back has ornate metal work that dates it about the 1920's.
