1940s Queen For a Day Cookbook - What's Cookin' by Jack Bailey
Campy Midcentury Style.

Jack Bailey was the host of "Queen for a Day" ~ the midcentury contest show for housewives. With an almost 20 year run between radio & television, the show was clearly a hit with its intended audience. Selected women would tell the stories of the hardships & troubles of their lives & how they'd persevered through it all. The live audience would then select, via the loudest applause, the winner ~ their Queen For a Day. The winner would be clad in a red velvet robe, crowned with a tiara, handed a dozen long-stem roses, and sat on a throne while she heard her prizes. Tears & cheers all around. Bailey would then give his trademark sign-off ~ "This is Jack Bailey, wishing we could make every woman a queen, for every single day." Bailey was a very well known & much beloved character :)

This 5.25" X 7.5" X .75" cookbook is a classic. "Jack Bailey's own book of recipes, stolen or otherwise, in a delightful combination of cookery & humor, with 15 pictures of the inimitable Bailey himself." The varied recipes in this 180 page cookbook are presented in a very chatty way (see pics 3 & 4) with many jokes and anecdotes. Very upbeat & campy in that classic midcentury way :)

This cookbook is in very good condition. There are two names signed in pencil on the very first page, and some light age-toning. But that's it. The rest of the book is great shape. No stains, tears or marks of any kind. The cover is clean & bright with only a little wear at the corners. There is no dust jacket. The spine is good. The book has been read & maybe actually used, but not too much. It is in very nice shape.

A classic look at the midcentury & its values ~ that "make the best of it, & we can do this together" view that was so predominant (& productive) in post WWII America. All in all, a pretty entertaining little read for any fan of the 50s :)
