Figure of Inspiration No. 1 - Fig

I had never eaten a fig before I studied abroad in France. Every day, I bought a little basket of fresh figs on my way home from school, and eating them now always makes me lonesome for Paris. On top of this personal nostalgia, archeologists have determined that figs have been an incredibly significant source of sustenance for humans since the very first civilizations in the Middle east. They were cultivated even before wheat and potatoes! Look for a magnetic fig tree coming soon to The Handmade Classroom:)

+This one-of-a-kind creation has been lovingly embroidered onto yellow organic cotton fabric with cotton embroidery floss.
+Stretched and secured in a high-quality 4" embroidery hoop
+It felt wrong to cover the back, as these pieces are such immediate and fleeting moments, but if you want me to back your embroidery with wool felt, I would be happy to do so!
+with each Figure of Inspiration comes a tag made of tree-free paper (handmade by my friend Kelsey of Kelsey Pike's Sustainable Papercraft) signed and dated by me:)
+Your embroidery comes wrapped in recycled paper and tied with cotton string...perfect for gift-giving!

++ I'm pleased to introduce a new component to The Handmade Classroom. "Figures of Inspiration" are little ideas, little moments of inspiration I encounter during my everyday routine (which includes all manner of random and odd things). Ever since I was a child, I've been enamored with embroidery...the way the thread feels pulling through taut fabric, the little facets of color that come together to make a completed image...just everything!

I've never been one of the world's great sketchbook-keepers. I'm just too fussy and detail oriented to make quick sketches that are helpful in any way, and I've found that simply some crisp, organic cotton and my floss box keep my mind active and my fingers busy while I sort out ideas in my head. Often these little inspiration sightings lead to more fleshed-out ideas in The Handmade Classroom! I want to share these little moments with you, in the form of charming little embroidery hoops, perfect as a unique gift for a teacher, friend, family member or colleague. They make great conversation pieces hanging in your home or classroom as well!

Inspiration comes in all forms...please share anything you are inspired by, and I would love to make a hoop just for you!
