This sweet little box was made in Russia, probably in the mid-twentieth century. It is made most likely of papier mache ( but might be wood ), with a lacquered surface and a hand painted scene of a red squirrel sitting on a pine bough with pine cones, and curiously, flowers as well. It measures 4-1/4 by 3 inches and stands 1-5/8 inches high.

Hand-painted lacquered boxes have been made in Russia since the early 20th century. This one contains a card with information, including the artist's name and the date, but as it is all written in the Cyrillic alphabet I am unable to decipher it. I am guessing that it dates to the mid 20th century. The bottom of the box has a hand-painted notation: Made in USSR, BB-147.

The box has some flaws: a raised bubbling on the surface, which may indicate that it was cleaned with a harsh solvent, or perhaps stored in an excessively hot environment. There are a few small chips in the black lacquer at the corners. The painted scene is done in the classic Russian style, with extremely fine detail.
