Charming and very unique vintage/antique necklace, circa 1930s. Wearable folk art. Someone took the time to painstakingly hand-paint each of the hundreds of small wooden and metal buttons that are strung together on a red cotton shoestring. The buttons are the small, simple, old utilitarian style with a metal shank on back and look amazing painted and strung up this way; they create a sculptural texture reminiscent of candy. The paint has incredibly rich tones and subtle gloss in the way of old oil enamels you sometimes see on furniture of this era. Hues include deep red, a slightly more orangey-red, mustard yellow, jade green, moss green, cobalt blue, and dark brown.

Necklace is securely knotted and slips over the head with no closures. Measures approximately 28 1/2" around and is 5/8" wide. It is in very good condition for its age, showing only the light overall evidence of wear you'd expect, including a bit of minor abrasion/crazing to the finish of some of the buttons.
