****NEW IMPROVEMENTS 2022
Jan Louet has been working on some improvements to the S10 and S17 with remarkable result:

A new bearing system for the orifice, resulting in a better adjustment of the take up.

A heavy take up when you are spinning on an empty or almost empty bobbin is always evident in a bobbin lead spinning wheel (Irish tension), even without use of a brake band.

This strong take up in a bobbin lead spinning wheel occurs particularly at higher rotation speeds of the flyer. Even if you release the brake band completely, the air resistance slows the flyer resulting in too heavy a take up for a very fine yarn where you needed that higher speed.

The air resistance at high speed is less of a problem with Scotch tension (flyer lead) because the bobbin has less surface area which results in less air resistance.

The S10 improvement is that it has a new nylon bearing support for the orifice that gives less friction than the brass bearing support. The original brass bearing system is a bit of a dirt catcher and the rotation of the orifice was not always as smooth, both creating more friction.
In the new system the orifice has a grove that fits the nylon support. While we have already started delivering S10 wheels and flyers that have these orifices with a groove, they still fit the older brass bearing support, while fitting the new orifice too. You can see the groove more clearly in the photo
The front plate of the mother-of-all is redesigned for this new system. We have added a simple plastic catch to give spinners a place to fasten their yarn so it does not unravel. Simple but effective! (Shown in the first picture above)

A new flyer with new sliding yarn guides. This flyer has less air resistance (as mentioned above), but more important; this flyer is more in balance than a flyer with hooks.

New IrT standard flyer Product # SA0151 - replaces SA0124 (also available unlacquered for the S17 SA0150) - features new sliding hooks and office. NOTE: Orfice is backward compatible with all older Louet IrT wheels
Some spinners prefer hooks because you don’t have to thread the yarn through them; however, yarn can easily be slipped in or out of the new sliding guides and the eye of the guide is closed, no fear of yarn slipping out.

Many spinners use the hooks on a flyer too lead the yarn in a zigzag across the flyer, to get less take up. That can be done with the new sliders too, if you attach them opposite each other. Flyer balance is impacted in VERY minor way.

The new sliders do not move on their own and they will not lose their grip over time. They are snug, yet slide easily enough when needed. The guide holes are large and smooth

The S17 is a single treadle wheel it has a Smooth ball bearing operation like all louet wheels, easy treadling, and a well balanced wheel . Let me repeat a well balanced wheel. I think louets are known for there great reputation of quality and durability but there balanced wheels ( that means less reaching to for the wheel to start your treading ) makes them a true joy to many happy spinners world wide.

The wood is sanded and the edges are rounded. It only needs a finishing with lacquer, stain or wax.

If you really want to add a skein winder the back post of the S17 will be 32 mm thick, the skein winder will not fit anymore, but louets new stand alone skein winder will solve that problem and is practical option any way. I prefer niddy noddy's (more universal and portable. )

I took about 30 minutes too oil the wood pieces for a finish let it sit over night and less than 25 mins to assemble it. A screw driver included ! You only need a mallet or hammer .

. My s10C double treadle is wonderful too, i just find because of teaching and taking my to students homes, demo's etc that i use it more. I keep thinking i will stop loving it at some point and so far my praises for this wheel just increase , not diminish over time. Truly louet is a superb manufacturer, and design company.
Ergonomics : for a life time of pain free spinning Always spin with your knees below your hips when you treadle very important ! From out of the box to finishing the wood to assemble and spinning was 2 1/2 hours ! several coats of oil finish ( i applied it in a warm environment shop for faster drying )
No special tools needed. It even comes with it's own screwdriver.

Louet Spinning Wheels

For over 40 Years, the Louët team in Holland has been researching, designing, experimenting, and consulting with you, the customer, to create a superior line of spinning wheels.

Louët wheels treadle lightly, are low maintenance and nearly adjustment free and can be modified with accessories for the expert spinner.

Louët wheels were originally geared towards spinning medium to heavy yarns. Although bobbins and flyers are available for spinning this type of yarn, the standard wheels have been redesigned to be more suitable for spinning fine to medium yarns. The orifice on the standard wheel is sufficiently large (12.5 mm or 1/2") as are the bobbins, (180-250 gr capacity), to allow you to create novelty yarns.Wheels come equipped with a two bobbin lazy kate.

Technically all Louet models are the same. Each wheel has a single belt bobbin drive with an adjustable flyer brake to regulate the tension. The flexible belts are made of polyurethane and never have to be adjusted.

All wheels are packed and shipped partially assembled in a flat box. The required assembly consists quite simply of tightening two nuts for which tools and instructions are provided. The shipping weight is 17-18 lbs.

Wheels are made of laminated hardwood with a "birch" exterior finish.

Ratios
All bobbins have a sheave with three settings on one side that can be used to obtain three different spinning ratios. They are: 1:5.5 for slow spinning and heavy yarn; 1:7.5 for medium yarn; and, 1:10.5 for fast spinning and fine yarn. (S45 ratios are: 7:1, 12:1 and 20:1)

The fly wheels of all our models are 50 cm (20") in diameter (except for the S45). They rotate on a maintenance free, lubricated for life ball bearing pack to ensure excellent spinning ability by allowing them to turn freely and quitely. The same maintenance free ball bearing is used at the footman connection. (Absolutely no lubrication is necessary for the bearings to work correctly)
