A Yurt is a beautifully elegant round tent, comprised of a structural lattice wall and conical array of rafters radiating from a central ring. There are many kinds of yurts throughout Central Asia, developed by nomadic peoples and their available technologies. The Mongolian Yurt, called a ‘Ger’ (meaning ‘Home’), is the most structurally intricate and symbolically manifest portable dwelling in the world. The ‘Cloud House’ has sheltered Nomadic Herdsfolk on the Great Mongolian Steppe for over a Millenia! It has remained virtually unchanged over 1,000 years, and continues to house ¾ of Mongolia.
The Traditional Mongolian Ger stands as the most beautiful and spiritually expressive form of Yurt. The most distinguished feature of the traditional Ger is the central Wheel-Crown, framed with heavy laminate timbers by a master craftsman. 4 Arches reach to the Cardinal Directions, while 4 more hold up the ‘Eye to Heaven’, a small ring that serves as a portal the Upper Worlds. Intricate carvings often adorn the Crown-Tono, Pole-Uni, and ‘Tree of Life’ Posts-Bagana.
The overall Cosmology of the Yurt is that of connecting people to the Sky Realm.
The ‘Cloud House’ brings its inhabitants closer to Heaven, as there is surely Something Magical about Circles.

Greetings, and Welcome to my World of Traditional Yurt Craft!
My name is Lyca Mikhael. I am an Architect, Designer, and Old-Ways Crafter, among vast and varied arts. The Mongolian Ger first caught my fascination in Architectural Anthropology studies at Cornell University, where it presented itself as the perfect ‘Sky Lodge’. My Old-Ways craft disciplines span portable structures, round-wood furniture, and wilderness bushcraft. I have developed a skillful hand in fabrication through a decade of training, practicum, and exploration in wood and cabinetry shops. I take pride in offering the most organic construction methods and natural finishes of any yurt maker – creating a living structure to share your life with.
I am the only Yurt Maker on Etsy, and the only Commissionable Crafter of Traditional Yurt Frames on the North American Continent!

**What Makes a Handmade Traditional Mongolian Gers Different?**
(Compared to Contemporary Yurt Makers Like : Pacific, Rainier, Colorado, Laurel Nest)
- Traditional Timber Crown : Built with 8-Cross Arches, an ‘Eye-to-Heaven’, Hand-Carved Laminate Compression Ring, and True Rafter Mortises.
(Compared to a naked skylight, clunky geometric ring composites, plywood laminates, or steel rafter posts)
- Balanced Proportions : Crown-to-Yurt Diameter Ratio of 1:4 for Pleasing Quartered Scale. Crown Arches Describe a Sphere that Meets the Floor. 6’ Walls and a Short Door, for Aerodynamic and Efficient ‘Cloud House’ Proportions.
(Compared to 3’ fit-all acrylic domes or odd 7’ tall walls)
- Premium Milled Frame : Clear Grained, Southern Yellow Pine Lattice, milled and drilled from premium board stock, rounded and finished with homemade natural linseed oil / beeswax blend. Hardwood Ash or Cherry Khana Optional.
(Compared to re-sawn 2x4 whitewood; splintery, rough faced, unfinished, toxic pressure treated, or cheaply painted)
- Khana Spacing and Lacing : Robust Staves in Tight 9” Spacing, Set in Balanced Square Aspect, Segmented into 3-5 nimble Units, Traditionally Tied and Lashed with Webbing and Lace.
(Compared to thin, open 12-18” spacing, disproportionate diamond aspect, unwieldy single units, or energetically abrasive steel bolts)
- True Gravity Stacked Framing : The Crown is Mortised to Securely Receive Matched Tenon Rafters. The Rafters Rest on the Khana Cross-Points, Directly Transfering Loads to the Lattice System.
(Compared to superficial steel pins, or rafters that uncomfortably float on a steel cable)
- Soft Connections : Tubular Nylon Webbing Tension Band, Woven through Khana with Adjustable Ring-Trucker’s-Hitch. Nylon Paracord Khana Laces, for soft aesthetic and user interface.
(Compared to visually unbalanced steel tension cable with sharp hardware, or intrusive steel lattice bolts)
