I have been operating a sign-making business – on a part-time basis, running out of my home - for a few years.
A few years ago, one of my friends, who had known my background (I’ve been doing CAD design and CNC programming), suggested to me that I might enjoy doing vinyl-cut signs. I did some investigating, and decided to jump in! I bought a vinyl-cutter, which came with its own software. It was a sizable investment for me at the time, but in a couple of years the investment paid off.
In 2009 I decided to buy a printer for my shop; I did some research, and I decided on a 30” Summa printer. It is a thermal-transfer printer, meaning it uses coloured ribbons instead of inks. This makes it a more environmental-friendly printer - no chemical waste and no fumes, while at the same time it is healthier for the operator: no dirty hands, nor suspicious smell. Since I am operating out of my home, I did not want any contaminants to pollute the air we breathe. Two years later I invested again, this time buying a 30” wide laminator.
November 2011 I opened my Etsy shop, and in December I had my first online sales!
