De espíritu libre, hecho a mano
Wild at heart, Made by hand
Me encantaría hacerte algo.
Besos, Melissa
Hi, I'm Melissa, the maker behind Arctic Poppy Designs.
I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, a third generation Alaskan. Growing up surrounded by that wild, expansive landscape shaped the way I see the world and allowed my love of art and the outdoors to take root early on. I now call Utah home, finding inspiration in its mountains and desert. Nature has always been where I go to feel most like myself.
Arctic Poppy Designs was named in memory of my grandpa, George, who always encouraged my creativity. When I was young, we would pick poppies together and make arrangements for my grandma, Lorelei, a memory I hold very close to my heart. If not for the constant encouragement from my friends and family, I wouldn't be the artist I am today.
Over time, the name has grown alongside me and taken on a meaning I never could have anticipated when I first began.
I now see the Arctic poppy as a powerful metaphor for the human experience. This delicate flower thrives in some of the most extreme and unforgiving environments, turning to follow the sun and maximizing every bit of available light to sustain itself. Even in the coldest, most barren landscapes, it finds a way to bloom.
Like the Arctic poppy, I've had to learn to seek the light in hard seasons. In 2017, I experienced sudden hearing loss and became hard of hearing. In 2025, I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer and recently finished treatment. These experiences transformed both my life and my art, teaching me that resilience isn't loud or dramatic; It's quiet, and stubborn, and beautiful. It's continuing to create anyway.
Wild at heart and made by hand, my jewelry and accessories are crafted with care and reflect all of it: the wildness, the humor, the tenderness, and hard won joy. I make pieces inspired by nature, by everyday moments, and by the belief that even small things can carry real meaning.
I'd love to make something for you.
xo, Melissa
