My Calligraphy Journey
As a child, I loved making fancy lettering. When I was in Sixth grade writing class, I wanted to do my own style of lettering but my teacher didn’t like that and gave me a grade of F in the class because I wouldn’t write the way she wanted me to. That never discouraged me, I kept on. The Christmas before I got married, my Grandma gave me my first calligraphy pen set. That’s when I learned what I was dabbling in actually had a name….Calligraphy.
I then decided to do my own wedding invitations using my own calligraphy. Bought the blank stationary and my Dad took the master copy of my invitation and had them printed. People began taking notice of my calligraphy and started asking if I would do some projects for them.
After a couple years, I quit my 9 to 5 job and started pursuing my calligraphy even more. I started going to Arts & Craft Shows selling my work. My business grew as the years passed. I was doing about 26 shows a year on weekends. I did my calligraphy on parchment paper that was matted and framed. I even started expanding my product line by purchasing a scroll saw and cutting different patterns for wood plaques in which I then painted and did some decorative painting of flowers and borders to enhance my calligraphy. I traveled to these regional Art Shows for 15 years until I got burned out from all the original artwork that I was doing and it was so much work doing those shows. I needed a break. That break lasted for 25 years as I went back to work fulltime doing the 9 to 5 jobs.
I always wanted to transition my calligraphy to digital calligraphy but didn’t know how to go about that. My dream was to transition to selling my work online someday. Then, in mid-2025, I heard about people were doing calligraphy using the Procreate App on the iPad. So, I purchased an iPad and started taking some tutorials on how to use Procreate to do my calligraphy. It took me several months to get in the swing of transitioning from dip pen and paper to the Apple Pencil and the Procreate App to create my calligraphy. After all those years of not doing my calligraphy, it all came back to me and I became obsessed with creating on the iPad!
Now, I have reached my next chapter in my journey by sharing my calligraphy on a much larger scale. Calligraphy With Purpose. I want to share with the world that I have a Purpose in sharing the Love of God and Giving God the Glory in all things!
