Todo comenzó una Navidad, cuando no estaba seguro de qué comprar para dos mejores amigos que se casaron.
It all started one Christmas, when I wasn't sure what to buy for two best friends who got married.
La República General ha sido algo que siempre se ha tirado en el fondo de mi mente. Pensaría en ideas de diseño geniales, pero no tengo dónde ponerlas. Cuando dos de mis amigos más queridos se casaron un septiembre, quise darles un regalo de Navidad significativo para su primera Navidad "casada". Él siempre la llamó "Mamasaurus" y ella siempre lo llamó "Papasaurus", así que una noche puse esas palabras en siluetas de dinosaurios, sin pensar nunca que era un apodo popular utilizado entre parejas.
Luego fui a una conferencia en Portland, Oregon, solo. Como introvertido, me resulta difícil estar cerca de la gente durante largos períodos de tiempo, y este fue un asunto intensivo de 4 días. También me resulta difícil iniciar conversaciones, y siempre me siento súper incómodo. Cuando regresé de esa conferencia, hice la camisa que desearía haber tenido: ¡mi camiseta "Genuine Introvert" que habría hecho que las interacciones sociales fueran mucho menos estresantes! ¡No tenía ninguna expectativa de que mi diseño eventualmente apareciera en el Huffington Post!
Avance rápido un poco más tarde y mi esposo y yo nos dirigimos a nuestra épica luna de miel de 7 meses de duración "alrededor del mundo", y quiero desesperadamente que tengamos camisas a juego para conmemorar el viaje para que podamos tomarnos fotos frente a todos los lugares geniales que estamos visitando para mirar hacia atrás cuando somos demasiado viejos para viajar, así que nuevamente tarde una noche armé un logotipo de estilo vintage con nuestro apellido en él.
Tenía la costumbre de comprar siempre camisas de temática al aire libre a mi esposo, ya que es un fanático del senderismo, y le encantaban, pero las revisaba tan rápido porque eventualmente se encogían (tiene 6'4, por lo que cualquier contracción las convierte en crop tops). Pensé que sería genial si en lugar de comprarle las camisas, las hiciera, con mis propios diseños temáticos al aire libre. La primera que hice fue "Las montañas están llamando". Me gustó tanto que me hice una camiseta sin mangas con el mismo diseño.
Lo que comenzó como solo yo queriendo tener algunas camisas impresas para amigos y para mi esposo se ha convertido increíblemente en una salida creativa que encuentro tan catártica. Cada pedido que envío me llena de orgullo, ¡ese es mi diseño que alguien quiere usar en su cuerpo! (En serio, ¿qué tan genial es eso?). Gracias a cada uno de los miembros de mi ejército de la República General, y por ustedes por tomarse el tiempo para leer esto y aprender un poco más sobre cómo llegó a ser este pequeño pedazo de paraíso.
General Republic has been something that was always tossed around in the back of my mind. I'd think of cool design ideas but have nowhere to put them. When two of my dearest friends tied the knot one September, I wanted to give them a meaningful Christmas gift for their first 'married' christmas. He always called her "Mamasaurus" and she always called him "Papasaurus", so late one night I put those words into dinosaur silhouettes, never thinking that it was a popular nickname used between couples.
Then I went to a conference in Portland, Oregon, all by myself. As an introvert I find it hard to be around people for long periods of time, and this was an intensive 4 day affair. I also find it hard to start conversations, and always feel super awkward. When I got back from that conference I made the shirt I wish I had had - my "Genuine Introvert" tee which would have made social interactions a lot less high-pressure! I had no expectation that my design would eventually be featured in the Huffington Post!
Fast forward a little later and my husband and I are heading for our epic, 7 month long "round the world" honeymoon - and I desperately want us to have matching shirts to commemorate the trip so that we can take photos of ourselves in front of all the cool places we're visiting to look back on when we're too old to travel - so again late one night I throw together a vintage style logo with our last name on it.
I had this habit of always buying my husband outdoorsy-themed shirts since he's a hiking fanatic, and he loved them, but he'd go through them so quickly because eventually they'd shrink (he's 6'4 so any shrinkage turns them into crop tops). I thought it would be so cool if instead of buying him the shirts, I made them, with my very own outdoorsy themed designs. The first one I did was "The Mountains are Calling". I liked it so much I made myself a tank top with the same design.
What started as just me wanting to have a few shirts printed for friends and for my husband has blossomed amazingly into a creative outlet that I find so cathartic. Every order I ship fills me with pride - that's my design that someone wants to wear on their body! (Seriously, how cool is that!?).
