Where it all started...

Cuando nuestro hijo Patrick tenía trece años, sugirió que le gustaría un torno de madera para Navidad. Siendo carpintero y una persona hábil, rápidamente acepté que sería una gran idea y le compramos un torno para madera barato. A lo largo de los años, él y yo fabricamos bastantes bolígrafos y otros kits, pero era estrictamente un pasatiempo. Avance rápido hasta el verano de 2018 y Carol encontró un nuevo pasatiempo: pintar con diamantes. Un día estaba sentada en la mesa mirándola pintar y noté que estaba luchando con ese tonto y atroz tubo de plástico rosa que te dan para colocar los diamantes. Hmmm... Corrí a su escritorio y encontré un bolígrafo delgado que había girado y comencé a pensar cómo podría colocar la punta de plástico del bolígrafo de diamante. ¡Epoxy! Sí, funcionó. Estaba tan feliz que le tomó una foto y la publicó en un grupo de Facebook al que pertenecía. Pronto había gente que también quería uno y ella dijo que debería venderlos. Sí, claro... eh, no me interesa... Pero mi mente empezó a darle vueltas. ¿Cómo puedo hacer estas cosas de manera más eficiente? Buscamos en Internet y solo encontramos un vendedor en Etsy que vendía algo como esto. Estaba pensando en un kit de bolígrafos para escribir cuando me di cuenta; Este NO es un bolígrafo para escribir. Es una herramienta de placer. Comencé a experimentar y construir prototipos y pronto Carol tuvo una pequeña mini colección de bolígrafos para pintar diamantes. Una vez más los fotografió y publicó y una vez más encontró mucho interés. Entonces acepté crearlos y venderlos.
Comencé a fabricar bolígrafos de diamantes en el pequeño garaje de una casa de alquiler a tiempo parcial. Oye, es dinero para cerveza (o refresco). Carol organizó las ventas desde la página de nuestro grupo de Facebook y comenzamos vendiendo bolígrafos que yo ya había creado. ¡Pero hombre! ¡Se agotarían a los pocos minutos de su publicación! Por eso siempre me preguntaba qué espacio en blanco debería usar a continuación. Oye, ¿por qué no dejamos que el cliente elija? ¡Nació nuestro modelo de negocio único! Hemos pasado por algunas iteraciones desde entonces. Ese primer año estuve tan ocupado trabajando solo en ese garaje que tuvimos que formar una lista de espera (que ya no se utiliza). ¡Los clientes tuvieron que esperar hasta cuatro meses incluso para realizar un pedido! No queríamos recibir dinero con tanta anticipación, por lo que trabajábamos dentro de las dos semanas posteriores a la realización del pedido. Vimos muchas otras empresas emergentes durante ese tiempo y vimos cómo crecía todo el hobby. Después de unos seis meses de negocio, di el aterrador paso de invertir en un torno mejor, así que ahora tenía un bonito Jet 1221 para encender y el económico torno Excelsior para pulir. Y crecimos. Se convirtió en un trabajo de tiempo completo para mí y mi esposa estaba haciendo malabarismos con dos trabajos de enfermería desde casa y manteniéndose al día con todo el trabajo administrativo involucrado en este negocio. Luego, en agosto de 2019, dimos el paso por el que habíamos estado trabajando durante diez años y compramos nuestra cabaña para jubilados en el lago. El garaje de 750 pies cuadrados selló el trato. Y seguimos creciendo. Desde que abrimos nuestro negocio, hemos vendido y enviado miles de artículos a clientes de todo el mundo.
Actualmente Carol y yo trabajamos en este negocio a tiempo completo. Ella es responsable de todos los aspectos administrativos y de marketing junto con la gestión de nuestros canales de redes sociales. . Nuestra hija, Caitlin, ha aprendido a realizar giros básicos; sin embargo, comenzará la escuela de enfermería a tiempo completo, por lo que su capacidad para ayudar será limitada. Nuestro hijo Patrick es enfermero registrado a tiempo completo; es supervisor adjunto de la unidad renal en un hospital importante. Pasa por aquí y entrega el trabajo a destajo cuando está disponible. Tenemos hasta tres tornos Jet y dos tornos mini Pen Pal junto con nuestro pequeño torno Excelsior económico con el que empezó todo. He estado renovando lentamente el garaje (en realidad, un taller exclusivo) desde que nos mudamos y continuaré trabajando en ese proyecto.

Updated for our 6 year business anniversary...
As a thirteen year old our son Patrick suggested he would like a wood lathe for Christmas. Being a carpenter and a handy type of guy I quickly agreed that this would be a great idea and we bought him a cheap wood lathe. Over the years he and I turned quite a few pens and other kits, but it was strictly a hobby. Fast forward to summer of 2018 and Carol found a new hobby: Diamond painting. One day I was sitting at the table watching her paint and noticed she was struggling with that silly, atrocious pink plastic tube they give you to place the diamonds. Hmmm.....I ran to her desk and found a slimline pen I had turned and started thinking how I could attach the plastic tip for the diamond pen. Epoxy! Yep, it worked. She was so happy she took a picture of it and posted it to a Facebook group she belonged to. Soon I had people wanting one too and she said I should sell them. Yeah, right...er, not interested...But my mind started turning it over. How can I make these things more efficiently? We looked all over the internet and found only one seller on Etsy selling anything like this. I was thinking in terms of a writing pen kit when it hit me; this is NOT a writing pen. It is a placer tool. I started experimenting and building prototypes and soon Carol had a little mini collection of diamond painting pens. Once again she photographed and posted them and once again found a lot of interest. So I agreed to create and sell them.
I started out turning diamond pens from the small garage of a rental house on a part time basis. Hey, it's beer (or soda) money. Carol organized the sales from our Facebook group page and we started by selling pens I had already created. But man! They would sell out within minutes of posting! So I was always wondering what blank I should use next. Hey, why don't we let the customer choose? Our unique business model was born! We have been through a few iterations since then. That first year I was so busy working alone in that garage that we had to form a waiting list (no longer being used). Customers had to wait up to four months to even place an order! We did not want to take money that far in advance so we worked within two weeks of an order. We saw a lot of other startups during that time and watched as the entire hobby grew. After about six months of business I took the scary step of investing in a better lathe so now I had a nice Jet 1221 to turn on and the cheap Excelsior lathe for polishing. And we grew. It became a full time job for me and my wife was juggling two work-from-home nursing jobs along with keeping up with all the administrative work involved in this business. Then, in August, 2019 we took the step we had been working towards for ten years and bought our retirement lake cottage. The 750 square foot garage sealed the deal. And we continued to grow. Since opening our business, we have sold and shipped thousands of items to customers all over the world.
At the present time Carol and I work at this business full time. She is responsible for all of the administrative and marketing aspects along with management of our social media channels. . Our daughter, Caitlin, has learned to do basic turning; however, she will be starting nursing school full time so her ability to help will be limited. Our son Patrick is a full-time Registered Nurse - he is a co-unit supervisor on the renal unit at a major hospital. He stops by and turns piece-work when he is available. We are up to three Jet lathes, and two mini Pen Pal lathes along with our cheap little Excelsior lathe that started it all. I have been slowly renovating the garage (actually a dedicated workshop) since we moved in and will continue working on that project.
