Kyle Lucia y Johannah Willsey son un estudio de diseño colaborativo formado por marido y mujer. Llevamos las antiguas artes de la herrería y los mosaicos a una audiencia contemporánea. Trabajando en metal, mosaico y madera, creamos obras de arte, muebles y barandillas arquitectónicas personalizadas, así como una línea de productos minoristas funcionales y decorativos. Utilizamos materiales recuperados, locales, duraderos y no tóxicos para crear un trabajo ambientalmente sustentable.
El estilo de Kyle es limpio y sencillo. Su objetivo es utilizar técnicas tradicionales de herrería para crear pliegues, conexiones y formas que reflejen las necesidades y la estética del diseño moderno. El trabajo en mosaico de Johannah es complejo y se centra en el color y la textura. Crea diseños cortados a mano inspirados en el mundo natural en piezas tanto artísticas como funcionales.
Kyle aprendió herrería a través de un aprendizaje tradicional inglés tanto en los EE. UU. como en el Reino Unido a partir de 1997. Posteriormente obtuvo una licenciatura en diseño de muebles de la Virginia Commonwealth University. Johannah tiene una licenciatura en historia del arte del College of William & Mary. Comenzó a trabajar en mosaicos en 2002. Desde la fundación de Phoenix Handcraft en 2010, nuestros proyectos favoritos lo combinan todo: metal, mosaico y madera.
Juntos, estamos criando (¡y educando en casa!) a nuestros dos hijos y a una colección de mascotas en la hermosa Virginia central. Cuando no estamos en los estudios, normalmente nos puedes encontrar caminando por el bosque o cavando en el jardín de nuestro patio trasero.
Kyle Lucia and Johannah Willsey are a husband-and-wife collaborative design studio. We bring the ancient arts of blacksmithing and mosaics to a contemporary audience. Using hand tools and early industrial equipment, we create modern designs with the timeless feel of handmade work.
Working in metal, mosaic, and wood, we create custom works of art, furniture, and architectural railing as well as a line of functional and decorative retail products. We use reclaimed, local, durable, and non-toxic materials to create environmentally sustainable work.
Kyle’s style is clean and straightforward. His goal is to use traditional blacksmithing techniques to create folds, connections, and shapes that reflect modern needs and design aesthetics. Johannah’s mosaic work is intricate and centered on color and texture. She creates hand-cut designs inspired by the natural world in both artistic and functional pieces.
Kyle learned blacksmithing through a traditional English apprenticeship in both the US and UK starting in 1997. He later earned a BFA in furniture design from Virginia Commonwealth University. Johannah holds a BA in art history from the College of William & Mary. She began working in mosaics in 2002. Since the founding of Phoenix Handcraft in 2010, our favorite projects bring it all together: metal, mosaic, & wood.
Together, we are raising (and homeschooling!) our two children, and a collection of pets in beautiful central Virginia. When we aren't in the studios, you can usually find us hiking in the woods or digging in our backyard garden.
