Welcome to Skur Collective where I design and make simple natural oak objects for inside and outside the home.
When I think about the story of Skur Collective, I immediately think back to some of my earliest childhood memories. Like the amount of time I spent outdoors, whether in open 'veld' (as we called it in South Africa) or the forests and mountains nearby. Or visiting my grandfather, who let me hammer nails into pieces of wood - something I could do for hours. For what felt like years, I did this every time I visited him. As I grew up I made simple wooden toys in my father's garage and then as I went to high school, then university and later started my career, my connection to wood and working with it took a backseat.
Years in corporate life left me disconnected from the things that formed me, the things I found so important and the things I tried to spend my then-minimal free time on. It took burnout and a long introspective look at myself to see what was missing: working with my hands, working with wood, creating and making things that slow you down before, during and after the process. After years of honing my skills on creating items for my own home and much convincing by friends and family, I finally decided to open to the public.
Skur Collective is my way back to that place of calm for myself and others. I make minimalist, natural objects by hand in my own workshop. I exclusively use FSC-certified or old, reclaimed wood. Each piece is made to create moments of calm in which people can feel present, grounded and connected to their environment whether it is indoors or outdoors.
