The Dark Academia Store opening September 2026
Welcome to The Dark Academia Store.
We sell prints of real paintings by real artists, chosen for dark and curious minds. Every artwork has a name, a date and a history. We never sell AI-generated art.
We search the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Rijksmuseum, the Smithsonian and other museums and public archives for paintings worth living with. Some you'll know, like Waterhouse's Lady of Shalott or Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog. Others wait to be rediscovered, like a Hungarian baron's moonlit forests or a Finnish skeleton gardener tending souls.
Each listing tells the true story behind the painting: the Goldfinch that survived the explosion that killed its painter, the skull an owner painted out of Waterhouse's Crystal Ball, the waiter whose fatal bet inspired Death on a Pale Horse. We research every work, prepare the file by hand and print it on 240gsm archival matte paper.
Our collections cover Pre-Raphaelite art, witchy and Gothic paintings, Dark Romanticism, Greek mythology, Dutch Golden Age still lifes and classic portraits. We also make hardback journals featuring the same paintings, for writers and readers.
Shipping is free and tracked. We print in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, and ship from the location closest to you.
New paintings join the collection every week. Favourite the shop to see them first.
