Nature is awesome, bring it indoors!
Soy una chica obsesionada con las plantas, cuando era adolescente, mi habitación parecía una jungla y pasé mis días cultivando jardines masivos a partir de cada semilla que podía tener en mis manos. Al encontrar un mentor maravilloso en mi antiguo vecino australiano, me enseñó a cultivar huertos que alimentarían a toda la cuadra. Para la universidad, asistí a la Universidad de California, Riverside, con sus hermosos jardines botánicos y recibí mi licenciatura en Ciencias Ambientales (el estudio del aire, el suelo, las plantas y el agua y cómo interactúan todos).
Me mudé al Gran Noroeste (Spokane, Washington) hace 9 años para estar más cerca de la naturaleza. Me encontré con una casa llena de ventanas y rodeada de hermosos árboles grandes. Se le conoce cariñosamente como "La Casa del Árbol". Es justo lo que necesito para sentirme como si estuviera afuera las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana, lejos de las luces fluorescentes y los cubículos. Regresamos al bosque, lo que permite mucha diversión de senderismo y trineo y el río está en la parte inferior de nuestra calle.
Los inviernos son largos aquí, me encanta el frío, pero esperar a que las cosas se reverdezcan afuera puede sentirse como una eternidad. Así que decidí reavivar mi amor por los terrarios, dejándome cultivar durante todo el año y tener naturaleza dentro y fuera. Tengo la maldición del perfeccionismo, que impide que muchas de las cosas con las que sueño se conviertan en realidad. Pero cuando creo terrarios, todo eso se desvanece y creo con abandono. El mundo puede ser un lugar tan complicado y abrumador y me encanta crear este pequeño mundo sereno perfecto encerrado en vidrio.
A medida que nuestro mundo se vuelve cada vez más técnico, creo que es muy importante reconectarse con la naturaleza tan a menudo como sea posible.
I am a girl obsessed with plants, as a teenager, my room looked like a jungle and I spent my days growing massive gardens from every seed I could get my hands on. Finding a wonderful mentor in my old Australian neighbor, she taught me how to grow vegetable gardens that would feed the whole block. For college, I attended the University of California, Riverside, with their beautiful botanical gardens and received my bachelors of science in Environmental Science (the study of air, soil, plants, and water and how they all interact).
I moved to the Great Northwest (Spokane, Washington) 9 years ago to be closer to nature. I found myself a home filled with windows and surrounded by beautiful large trees. It is lovingly referred to as "The Treehouse". It is just what I need to feel like I am outside 24/7, far away from fluorescent lights and cubicles. We back up to the forest which allows for lots of hiking and sledding fun and the river is at the bottom of our street.
The winters are long here, I love the cold but waiting for things to green up outside can feel like an eternity. So I decided to rekindle my love for terrariums, letting me garden year round and have nature inside and outside. I have the curse of perfectionism, which prevents a lot of the things I dream about from becoming a reality. But when I create terrariums, that all falls away and I create with abandon. The world can be such a complicated, overwhelming place and I love creating this perfect serene little world encased in glass.
As our world becomes more and more technical, I think it is so important to reconnect with nature as often as possible.
