Functional Pottery to Make You Smile
Somos hermanas que pasamos nuestra infancia jugando al aire libre y haciendo cosas juntas con cualquier material que pudiéramos tener en nuestras manos: barro, hojas, plumas, crayón, papel, ramitas, cuerdas, restos de tela y harina casera y pegamento de agua. Cuidamos parches de jardín, imprimimos flores, decoramos huevos y galletas, hicimos perchas de plantas de macramé y móviles, y revisamos un libro de origami de la biblioteca tan a menudo que la bibliotecaria nos hizo esperar un mes antes de que nos dejara revisarlo nuevamente.
Siempre nos han atraído especialmente las artes y oficios populares. La gente de todo el mundo tiene hambre de belleza. Tallan y pintan sus casas y muebles, tejen patrones en sus mantas, bordan su ropa, cultivan flores y hornean pan decorativo para ocasiones festivas, casando la función con la belleza. Los creadores de las formas de arte popular permanecen anónimos, pero sus diseños tuvieron tanto éxito que se han convertido en parte de la lengua vernácula.
Ángela soñaba con ilustrar libros infantiles, María soñaba con convertirse en alfarera, pero ninguno de los dos podía imaginarse dirigiendo un negocio. En cambio, estudiamos biología y lingüística, y pasamos décadas enseñando y criando familias. Continuamos pasando tiempo al aire libre y haciendo cosas: murales, marionetas, piñatas, calcetines elegantes. La gente nos decía que debíamos vender nuestras creaciones, pero estábamos ocupados y no teníamos tiempo ni ganas de hacer más de lo que necesitábamos para embellecer nuestro entorno y dar placer a nuestra familia y amigos.
Y luego nos jubilamos, nos convertimos en vecinos de al lado y tomamos clases de cerámica juntos. Nos lo pasamos de maravilla, pero pronto nos dimos cuenta de que tendríamos que empezar a vender nuestra cerámica si queríamos tener suficiente dinero o espacio para seguir haciéndola. Comenzar un negocio todavía era intimidante, pero somos dos, ya no tenemos tanto miedo al fracaso como solíamos tener, y hemos aprendido tantas cosas en nuestras vidas que pensamos que también podríamos aprender a administrar un negocio.
Nuestro objetivo no ha cambiado: proporcionar a las personas artículos funcionales y cotidianos que los hagan sonreír, que sean un placer de usar y que agreguen belleza y alegría a sus hogares. Nos encanta hacer y decorar macetas, nos encanta interactuar con ustedes, nuestros clientes, y esperamos que se note.
We are sisters who spent our childhood playing outdoors and making things together out of whatever materials we could get our hands on: mud, leaves, feathers, crayon, paper, twigs, string, fabric scraps, and homemade flour and water glue. We tended garden patches, pressed flowers, decorated eggs and cookies, made macrame plant hangers and mobiles, and checked one origami book out of the library so often that the librarian made us wait a month before she would let us check it out again.
We have always been particularly drawn to folk arts and crafts. People all around the world hunger for beauty. They carve and paint their homes and furniture, weave patterns into their blankets, embroider their clothes, grow flowers, and bake decorative bread for festive occasions, marrying function with beauty. The originators of folk art forms remain anonymous, but their designs were so wildly successful that they have become part of the vernacular.
Angela dreamt of illustrating children's books, Maria dreamt of becoming a potter, but neither of us could imagine ourselves running a business. Instead, we studied biology and linguistics, and spent decades teaching and raising families. We continued to spend time outdoors, and to make things -- murals, puppets, pinatas, fancy socks. People told us that we should sell our creations, but we were busy and had no time or desire to make more than we needed to beautify our surroundings and to give pleasure to our family and friends.
And then we retired, became next door neighbors, and took pottery classes together. We had a blast, but we soon realized that we would have to start selling our pottery if we wanted to have enough money or space to continue making it. Starting a business was still intimidating, but there are two of us, we are no longer as afraid of failure as we used to be, and we have learned so many things in our lifetimes that we figured we could learn to run a business, too.
Our goal has not changed: to provide people with functional, everyday items that make them smile, are a pleasure to use, and add beauty and cheer to their homes. We love making and decorating pots, we love interacting with you, our customers, and we hope it shows.
