Crafting Beauty, Inspiring Healing from Within
About Virginia Baker Woolf
I was born in Sydney and have had the privilege of living, studying, and working for extended periods in Spain and France. After completing Language Diplomas at both the Sorbonne and the University of Sevilla, I earned a double degree in Spanish at UNSW. For many years, my professional journey led me to work as a University Lecturer in Spanish and later as an Educational Management Consultant and Executive Coach. I currently call Sydney home, where I reside with my husband, Gordon, now that my adult children have spread their wings.
While my academic and professional life took me in various directions, my artistic journey began unexpectedly. In 2007, I faced a profound personal challenge when I fell seriously ill following the tragic loss of my father. His passing, a result of a freakish accident, shook our family to its core. My father's harrowing ordeal, an emergency craniotomy, left him in Intensive Care for five weeks, connected to countless tubes and drains, his skull stapled shut. Though he survived, his battle was far from over. Brain damage hung ominously over us, and his life came to a heartbreaking end shortly after he left the Intensive Care unit. The traumatic series of events culminated in my own collapse, as I was diagnosed with pneumonia.
Despite the overwhelming health challenges and the mystery surrounding my illness, a friend suggested that I try a painting class. Desperate for a distraction and a glimmer of joy, I gave it a shot. Little did I know that this small act would transform my life. In that class, I began a piece of artwork called "Constellations." The positive feedback and compliments I received ignited a passion I had never known. What started as a therapeutic escape from my chronic illness blossomed into a remarkable journey of self-discovery. Through art, I found healing beyond measure.
My art-making process has become a profound, cathartic experience. Every piece I create is a testament to the power of embracing a "beginner's mind." In my world, there are no mistakes; there are only opportunities for growth and learning. Each mark, whether planned or accidental, contributes to the unique story of the artwork. This approach has led to a captivating and liberating layering process that defines my artistic style.
I approach each painting and every piece of jewelry with the same sense of wonder and experimentation. The process is intuitive and ever-evolving, often guided by the subtle interplay of texture, structure, color, and line. I work primarily with acrylic and mixed media, incorporating spontaneous markings, textured surfaces, and multiple layers to create depth and complexity.
Every artistic endeavor is an exploration into the unknown. While I may have a rough idea of the colors and some design concepts in mind, the creative journey unfolds in the moment. The act of painting is a deeply intuitive and somatic process, where the hand and the eye sometimes lead the way before the mind catches up. Mistakes and accidents are not setbacks; they are celebrated as gateways to unexpected perspectives and continuous learning. It's a process that thrives on the boundless possibilities within each stroke.
With both my art and jewelry creations, I strive to craft unique worlds deeply influenced by the tiniest of marks, each telling its own captivating story. My artistic journey is a testament to the healing power of creativity and the infinite potential found within the beauty of imperfection. Thank you for joining me on this inspiring and ever-evolving voyage of discovery.
