Ele constantemente me surpreende ver a conexão entre a música e todas as outras formas de arte — como na música podemos encontrar inspiração para explosões criativas que alcançam em todas as direções. O meio de Whitley Davis é tecido, e sua expressão varia de roupas recicladas a patches até roupas artesanais únicas. Se você já conheceu esta jovem mulher exuberante, você sem dúvida entenderá o quanto o amor surge através de cada uma de suas criações maravilhosas e maravilhosas whitley (anteriormente Whitley's Designs). Embora sua paixão pela costura tenha sido algo que ela percebeu muito jovem, é sua inspiração de bandas como The Disco Biscuits e The Grateful Dead e das comunidades artísticas que os cercam que continuam influenciando sua expressão. Ela empresta grande parte de sua capacidade de criar e evoluir para suas experiências com as pessoas, lugares e sons dentro dessas esferas.

"Sinto que me tornei parte de uma comunidade de amor infinito", explicou ela. Sem essas conexões, ela sabe que sua arte não seria a mesma. A artista baseada em Virgina fez um trabalho incrível de networking e compartilhamento de sua arte, seja através de negócios por atacado com fornecedores ou itens de vestuário personalizados que se espalharam muito além de suas origens no nordeste.

Desde pintar os animais favoritos das pessoas em camisetas, até se formar com as decorações de Designer do Ano e Melhor Coleção sênior, até se preparar para lançar sua própria linha de designs de assinatura, ela provou que quando você trabalha duro para manter sua visão clara e permitir que a inspiração flua de seu entorno, você pode ter sucesso em lidar com sua paixão. É claro que houve "altos e baixos" em sua carreira artística, mas parece que ela rapidamente se move através desses obstáculos, saindo por cima.

Whitley é certamente a definição de coragem. A jovem se dedica à sua expressão e está determinada a continuar a crescer. Ela explicou que tenta manter a sensação de " eu não sei nada", a fim de manter o vasto espaço de conhecimento inexplorado na ponta dos dedos. Esta jovem está aqui para mudar o jogo de design de roupas. "Meus objetivos fazem biggie parecer pequena", ela me disse quando perguntei quais as dificuldades que ela enfrenta. Como muitos universitários, ela é sobrecarregada pelo peso da dívida, mas entende o dar e receber de crescer organicamente uma marca criativa. "Eu só me esforço para fazer algo do que os outros não chamariam de nada, mas para mim, é tudo... Eu tenho uma grande jornada pela frente.

Outro obstáculo que ela mencionou é que, no meu coração, a parte mais sombria do nosso mundo, é que precisa haver mais apreciação da arte. Sinto que muitas pessoas da nossa comunidade podem ter empatia com esse fato. Os artistas fazem o mundo girar com a criatividade que eles estão constantemente bombeando através de nossos sentidos, e ainda assim é muitas vezes dado como certo. Esperamos ser estimulados, e sim, é claro que às vezes apoiamos através de nossas compras, mas com que frequência esse apoio termina em ganho individual, alimentado por nossos desejos de consumir? Acredito que cada um de nós poderia trabalhar para levar esse apoio ao próximo nível, mantendo-se ativo em nossa apreciação através da partilha de mais crédito, compartilhando a arte daqueles que tornam este mundo tão agradável, e muitas vezes, suportável. Como seria maçante de uma vida sem eles!

"Quero que as pessoas pensem nas coisas que amam", disse Whitley. "Quero que as pessoas aprendam e estejam umas com as outras [através do compartilhamento de experiências]. Somos todos professores nesta linda vida. Somos uma comunidade aqui para ajudar a construir um ao outro, e quero que as pessoas aprendam sobre o que eu mais amo e sejam apaixonadas."

Os artistas vivem para compartilhar seu trabalho, não apenas para cumprir sua própria expressão, mas também para incitar a emoção no coração daqueles que apreciam suas criações. Mesmo assim, muitas vezes chega mais longe do que isso. Para Whitley Davis, suas preocupações residem na sustentabilidade. Ela, como a maioria de nós, muitas vezes está desapontada com a qualidade das roupas de grandes empresas que tomam atalhos a fim de aumentar as margens de lucro e itens de produção em massa para alimentar a desagradável "palavra c", o consumismo. Ela quer preencher o vazio através de roupas de upcycling para manter sua wearability, usando patches para corrigir o desgaste cotidiano, ou fazendo direito na primeira vez ao projetar novas roupas.

Whitley Davis’ medium is fabric, and her expression ranges from upcycled garments to patches to unique handmade apparel. If you have ever met this young exuberant woman, you will undoubtedly understand how much love surges through each and every one of her unique Wondrous Whitley creations (formerly Whitley’s Designs). Although her infatuation with sewing was something she realized at a very young age, it is her inspiration from bands like The Disco Biscuits and The Grateful Dead and the artistic communities that surround them that continue to influence her expression. She lends a great deal of her ability to create and evolve to her experiences with the people, places, and sounds within these spheres.

“I feel like I’ve become a part of a community of infinite love,” she explained. Without these connections, she knows her art wouldn’t be the same. The Virgina-based artist has done an incredible job networking and sharing her art, whether it’s through wholesale deals with vendors or custom-made clothing items that have spread much further than her northeast origins.

From painting peoples’ favorite animals on t-shirts, to graduating with the decorations of Designer of the Year and Best Senior Collection, to gearing up to launch her own line of signature designs, she has proved that when you work hard to keep your vision clear and allow inspiration to flow from your surroundings, you can be successful in tackling your passion. Of course there have been “ups and downs” in her artistic career, but it seems as though she swiftly moves through these obstacles, coming out on top.

Whitley is certainly the definition of spunk. The young woman is dedicated to her expression and is determined to continue to grow. She explained that she tries to maintain the sense of, “I know nothing,” in order to keep the vast space of untapped knowledge at her fingertips. This young lady is here to change the game of clothing design. “My goals make Biggie look small,” she told me when I asked her what difficulties she faces. Like many college graduates, she is burdened by the weight of debt, but understands the give and take of organically growing a creative brand. “I just strive to make something out of what others would call nothing, but to me, it is everything…I have a big journey ahead of me.”

Another obstacle she mentioned that is, in my heart, the most dismal part of our world, is that there needs to be more art appreciation. I feel that a lot of people in our community can empathize with this fact. Artists make the world go ‘round with the creativity they are constantly pumping through our senses, and yet it is often taken for granted. We expect to be stimulated, and yes, of course sometimes we support through our purchases, but how often does that support end in individual gain, fueled by our desires to consume? I do believe every one of us could work on taking that support to the next level by staying active in our appreciation through giving more credit by sharing the art of those who make this world so enjoyable, and often times, bearable. How dull of a life it would be without them!

“I want people to think about the things they love,” Whitley told me. “I want people to learn and be with each other [through sharing experiences]. We are all teachers in this beautiful life. We are a community here to help build each other up, and I want people to learn about what I love most and am passionate about.”

Artists live to share their work, not only to fulfill their own expression, but also to incite excitement in the hearts of those who appreciate their creations. Even still, it often times reaches further than that. For Whitley Davis, her concerns lie in sustainability. She, like most of us, is often disappointed in the quality of clothing from larger companies who take shortcuts in order to increase profit margins and mass-produce items to fuel the nasty “c word,” consumerism. She wants to fill the void through upcycling clothing to maintain their wearability, using patches to fix everyday wear-and-tear, or doing it right the first time when designing new garments.

Wondrous Whitley has been bubbling with new ideas and aspirations for the coming months, so be on the look out for her new lines, which will be chalk full of beauty, and she knows it! “This Whittle caterpillar is about to be a butterfly!”
