Me encanta usar materiales recuperados de todo tipo. Las telas, la ropa recuperada y los artículos industriales me hablan, me dicen qué hacer con ellos y qué colores, patrones, formas y materiales debo combinar. Encuentro los centros de reciclaje súper emocionantes, y las infinitas posibilidades de todos los artículos en ellos esperando a ser encontrados y utilizados.
Empecé a usar ropa vintage en la década de 1980 cuando descubrí una increíble camisa de cachemira en una tienda de segunda mano. ¡Mi amor por los textiles, el color y los patrones comenzó allí mismo! En la década de 1990, mientras trabajaba para Greenpeace, reciclé prendas antiguas y las vendí en los mercados. A partir de ahí, pasé a estudiar diseño de moda, luego diseño de vestuario en la universidad, donde aprendí a coser, teñir, hacer cuentas a mano, reciclar, serigrafiar y adornar textiles para crear prendas únicas.
En Australia, trabajé en la industria del cine, la televisión y el teatro durante más de 15 años, y allí desarrollé mi pasión por la transformación de textiles, así como el amor por el trabajo en equipo creativo y el compromiso con las artes comunitarias. Mientras estudiaba mi BFA en The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), pasé de los tintes de bajo impacto a los tintes naturales, y también comencé a pensar en la pequeña cantidad de materiales sostenibles utilizados en el mundo del arte y la artesanía.
Durante tres años impartí varios talleres textiles a miembros de la comunidad de Chicago, así como cursos de verano de moda sostenible a estudiantes de 10 a 13 años en SAIC. Durante estas clases, pasamos mucho tiempo discutiendo temas de sustentabilidad de la industria del diseño, cómo tomar decisiones éticas al comprar artículos, diseño sin desperdicio, entornos de trabajo seguros, opciones de artesanías recicladas y emprendimiento creativo.
Con Fossick, quiero compartir mi amor por los colores, los patrones y los textiles recuperados al ofrecer materiales divertidos, vibrantes y sostenibles para sus proyectos creativos. Me especializo en combinaciones de colores y patrones, por eso comencé los paquetes de "collage de colores". Estos son muy divertidos de armar, ya que adoro combinar patrones y texturas.
Mi otra pasión es desarrollar nuevos materiales a partir de desechos textiles y vegetales, y descubrir cómo hacer bioplásticos y biocueros para crear materiales biocompostables, lentejuelas, cuentas e hilos.
I love to use reclaimed materials of all kinds. Fabrics, salvaged clothing, and industrial items talk to me - they tell me what to do with them, and which colors, patterns, shapes, and materials I should combine together. I find recycling centers super exciting, and the endless possibilities of all of the items in them just waiting to be found and used.
I started wearing vintage clothing in the 1980s when I discovered an awesome paisley shirt in a thrift store. My love for textiles, color, and pattern started right there! In the 1990s while working for Greenpeace I upcycled vintage garments and sold them at markets. From there I went on to study fashion design, then costume design at college where I learned how to sew, dye, hand bead, upcycle, screen print, and embellish textiles to create one-off garments.
In Australia I worked in the feature film, TV, and theatre industry for more than 15 years, and I developed my passion for transforming textiles there, as well as a love for creative teamwork, and community arts engagement. While studying my BFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), I transitioned from low impact dyes to natural dyes, and I also started to think about the small amount of sustainable materials used in the art and craft world.
For three years I taught various textile workshops to members of the Chicago community, as well as sustainable fashion summer courses to 10 - 13 year old students at SAIC. During these classes, we spent a lot of time discussing design industry sustainability issues, how to make ethical choices when purchasing items, zero waste design, safe working environments, upcycling craft choices, and creative entrepreneurship.
With Fossick, I want to share my love of colors, patterns and reclaimed textiles by offering fun, vibrant, and sustainable materials for your creative endeavors. I specialize in color and pattern combinations, which is why I started the "color collage" packs. These are so much fun to put together, as I adore combining patterns and textures.
My other passion is developing new materials from textile and plant waste, and figuring out how to make bio-plastics and bio-leathers to create bio-compostable materials, sequins, beads, and yarns.
