John Purlia is a self-taught photographer who began his art career in 2004 with the purchase of his first digital camera.

Raised in Alpine, California, just outside of San Diego, he attended California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, earning a degree in Computer Science. As an avid art collector, Purlia is attracted to saturated color and fairytale-like imagery. Much like a painter applies brush to canvas to tell visual stories, he views photography as a medium for creating narrative art. Purlia is also a successful published author and essayist whose writings include short fiction and contributions to artist monographs. Remaining close to his roots, he currently resides in a 1927 Spanish Colonial landmark in La Jolla, surrounded by books, music, and vintage toys, which meld together for a powerful artistic influence when Purlia stages his playful photographic tales.
