Der Felted Opal wurde eher aus einer Laune heraus gegründet, aber mein ganzes Leben lang war ich ein „Macher“. Dieser Etsy-Shop würde mich als Sechsjährige sehr stolz machen; zu wissen, dass ich von der Herstellung von Geschenken und Karten in jungen Jahren zu einem ganzen Etsy-Shop als Erwachsene übergehen würde, in dem ich Dinge herstellen könnte, die andere Leute wirklich lieben und kaufen möchten! Ich kann ehrlich sagen, dass ich meinen Kindheitstraum lebe!

Ich arbeite mit so viel Sorgfalt an allem, was ich mache, und es ist wichtig, dass Sie das wissen. Ich bin extrem detailorientiert und habe eine leichte (ok, vielleicht auch starke) perfektionistische Ader.

Ich habe das Gefühl, dass alles, was ich mache, nicht nur ein Spiegelbild meines Ladens ist, sondern auch ein Spiegelbild meiner Persönlichkeit. Ihr Glück ist von größter Bedeutung, denn Geld ist heutzutage teuer und es ist mein Ziel, dass Sie sich beim Öffnen Ihrer Bestellung sagen: „Das hat sich zu 100 % gelohnt.“

Mein „Büro-/Arbeitsplatz“ ist der Esstisch (97,3 % der Zeit sieht es hier aus, als wäre eine Filzbombe explodiert), aber dieser Raum hat die beste Beleuchtung im ganzen Haus, also was kann man tun?

Ich habe das „Nähen“ zum ersten Mal als kleines Mädchen gelernt, dank meiner Mamaw Joan. Der Grund, warum ich „Nähen“ in Anführungszeichen setze, ist, dass sie, seien wir ehrlich, den Großteil der Arbeit erledigt hat. Ich habe einfach mit dem Fuß auf das Paddel geklopft und ein paar (nicht sehr gerade) Stiche gemacht. Sie starb 2010 und ich habe 2020 richtig mit dem Nähen angefangen, als mein Sohn anfing, sich Dinge zu wünschen (ein billiger Schlafsack/Nackentuch für ein bisonbesessenes Kleinkind war mein erster Versuch) und als ich anfing, wünschte ich mir, ich hätte als kleines Mädchen besser aufgepasst! Ich habe all ihre alten Nähsachen geerbt und jedes Mal, wenn ich etwas von ihr benutze, ist es, als wäre sie direkt bei mir.

Ich habe schon immer gern gezeichnet und gemalt, und wenn man einige meiner früheren Arbeiten mit meinen neueren vergleicht, ist das ehrlich gesagt schon komisch. Vögel, Hunde und ganz allgemein Tiere sind meine Lieblingsmotive. Porträts machen mir auch Spaß! Ich habe ein paar davon gemacht, und es ist erstaunlich zu sehen, wie aus dem Chaos ein Meisterwerk wird. Als ich jünger war, habe ich zunächst mit Acrylfarben angefangen, mich dann an Ölfarben versucht, aber letztendlich festgestellt, dass Aquarellfarben ohne Zweifel mein bevorzugtes Medium sind (wobei ich Filz natürlich nicht mit einschließe!).

Ich erstelle alle meine Schnittmuster selbst aus Wachspapier, Zeitungen oder einfach nur Computerpapier. Manchmal klappt es, manchmal nicht (von dem Dinosaurier-Fiasko 2021 will ich erst gar nicht anfangen) und alles ist individuell von Hand zugeschnitten, obwohl mir mein Mann vor ein paar Jahren zu Weihnachten einen Cricut geschenkt hat (P.S. – sagen Sie ihm nicht, dass ich das Ding immer noch nicht hinbekomme).

The Felted Opal was started on a bit of a whim, but my whole life I've been a "maker." This Etsy store would make 6-year-old me very proud; to know that I'd go from hand-making gifts & cards at a young age to have a whole store on Etsy as an adult, where I'd get to make things that other people truly loved and wanted to buy! I can honestly I am living my childhood dream!

So much care goes into everything that I make and it's important for you to know that. I'm extremely detail-oriented with a bit (ok, maybe a lot) of a perfectionist streak.

I feel that everything I make is a reflection of not only my shop but a reflection of who I am as a person. Your happiness is of the greatest importance because money is expensive these days and it is my goal that when you open your order, you say to yourself, "this was 100% worth it"

My "office/work space" is the dining room table (97.3% of the time it looks like a felt bomb went off in here) but, this room has the best lighting in the house, so what can you do?

I initially learned how to "sew" when I was a little girl, courtesy of my Mamaw Joan. The reason I put sew in quotations is because, let's be honest, she did the bulk of it. I just tapped my foot on the paddle and ran a few (not very straight) stitches. She died in 2010 and I got really into sewing in 2020 when my son started requesting things (a knock-off sleeping bag/napper for a bison-obsessed toddler was my first attempt) and when I started, boy, did I wish I'd paid better attention when I was a little girl! I have inherited all of her old sewing stuff and every time I use something of hers, it's like she's right there with me.

I've always enjoyed drawing and painting and if you could compare some of the earlier works to the more recent ones, honestly, it's comical. Birds, dogs and honestly, just animals, in general, are my favorite things to paint. Portraits are fun too! I have done a few of those and it's amazing to see the mess turn into the masterpiece. I initially started with acrylics when I was younger, attempted oils, but ultimately, discovered that watercolors are without a doubt my preferred medium (obviously not including felt when I say this!)

I make all of my sewing patterns myself using wax paper, newspapers, or just plain-old computer paper. Sometimes they work out and sometimes they don't (don't even get me started on the dinosaur fiasco of 2021) and everything is individually hand-cut despite my husband getting me a cricut for Christmas a few years ago (ps - don't tell him I still can't figure that thing out)
