Designs born from the NICU—celebrating miracles, resilience, and the families who love them
Hola, soy Caitlyn, enfermera de la UCIN que se convirtió en mamá de la UCIN.
Me enamoré de una de mis pequeñas pacientes y decidí quedármela para siempre. Nuestra hija, Ángel, nació con tan solo 23 semanas y pasó casi 11 meses en la UCIN. Volvió a casa con oxígeno durante sus primeros dos años y aún lleva una sonda gástrica a los tres. Gracias a su amor infinito, a unos terapeutas y especialistas increíbles, y a su férrea determinación, ahora es una niña excepcional y próspera.
Convertirme en mamá médica fue una auténtica conmoción; me cambió la vida. Desarrollé un respeto aún mayor por las familias con necesidades médicas y especiales, y una perspectiva completamente nueva sobre mi rol como enfermera de la UCIN. La maternidad me transformó en una cuidadora más centrada en la familia; ahora veo a toda la familia como mi paciente. Mi misión en cada turno es alegrarles el día, a veces con manualidades, baños de burbujas, sesiones de fotos, momentos de contacto piel con piel o celebraciones importantes; y a veces con una mano que me toman en silencio, un abrazo, una lágrima compartida o una conversación sincera.
Quería combinar mi amor por la UCIN y el complejo mundo médico con mi pasión por la creatividad y el diseño, y así nació Design in Sunshine. Cada pieza se crea para honrar la fuerza, la resiliencia y el amor que brillan con tanta intensidad en los padres de la UCIN y sus hijos milagrosos.
Hi, I’m Caitlyn—NICU Nurse turned NICU Mama.
I fell in love with one of my tiny patients and decided to keep her forever! Our daughter, Angel, was born at just 23 weeks and spent almost 11 months in the NICU. She came home on oxygen for her first two years and still has a g-tube at age three. Thanks to endless love, incredible therapists and specialists, and her own fierce determination, she’s now a thriving, exceptional toddler.
Becoming a medical mama was a complete shell shock—it changed me to my core. I gained an even deeper respect for medical and special needs families, and a whole new perspective on my role as a NICU nurse. Motherhood transformed me into a more family-centered caregiver; now, I see the entire family as my patient. My mission with every shift is to bring a little light into their day—sometimes through crafts, bubble baths, photoshoots, skin-to-skin moments, or milestone celebrations; and sometimes through a quiet hand to hold, a hug, a shared tear, or an honest conversation.
I wanted to combine my love for the NICU and medically complex world with my passion for creativity and design—and that’s how Design in Sunshine was born. Each piece is created to honor the strength, resilience, and love that shine so brightly in NICU parents and their miracle children.
