Dzonu ~ Symbolic to many West African ethnic groups, beads were passed down within families for centuries and were said to possess the incantations, prayers, and healing properties of wise elders.
Ghanaian and Togolese beads became particularly favored for their medicinal and healing powers. Each color variant was thought to house a specific healing property and was used for a specific ailment. Known all over the world for their use in Dipo/Krobo initiation ceremonies, Trade, powdered glass, and glass seed beads have become increasingly popular outside of Ghana and Togo.
Share in the tradition and pass on a bit of history to your friends, family, and of course yourself. I would love to share a bit of my heritage with you.
Body Butter ~ I have a vivid memory of my grandmother bathing me in a huge basin in the middle of the courtyard and rubbing my body down with shea butter before yelling to one of my cousins to come get ready for their bath. I am reminded of such memories every time I bathe. Though my grandmother has passed on the Yokumi (shea butter), and Cocomi (cocoa butter) in Ewe keeps her spirit alive and with me at all times.
In its natural and organic form, Shea and Cocoa butters can be ingested. The shea nut is used to oil, butter, black soap, mosquito repellent, water purification and the remnants used to light fires. The Cocoa bean can be eaten once it's ripe, roasted for chocolate production, and cocoa butter.
Every country's butter is slightly different in texture and smell as the nuts used to make the butters range due to the conditions they grew in and the tedious process of making the butters. Try one that you've found in the past or try them all and see which country has the butter that your body enjoys the most.
