FROM TREE TO FURNITURE
Out of great respect for nature, Howt gives a second life to trees that were forced to fell. We do not work with trees specially planted for wood production, but (urban) local trees that can no longer stand due to disease, work or green management.
After decades of growing, plagued by the natural elements on our Belgian coast, the wood stove or shredder does not seem to us to be a respectful end for these beautiful wonders of nature. We would rather see them live on as a table, sofa, cutting board,...
From tree to furniture, at Howt everything is done in-house.
The whole process starts with the tree itself. At first sight, the tree already reveals some of its shape and can be started to saw it with the chainsawmill (mobile sawmill) in usable wooden planks: "slabs" or "cookies".
Then the long process of drying can begin: depending on the type of wood and thickness, air drying can take months to years. After air drying follows a cure in the "solar kiln", after all, the air-dry wood would still tear and turn once it comes indoors. We built this solar drying oven to an old concept where the sun provides all the energy to make the wood dry enough to build furniture with it.
Once the wood has a moisture percentage of 8-10%, it can be used as furniture wood and the creation of a new piece can begin. A hole, a crack, a splint,... all the 'imperfections' make the bib even more interesting and beautiful. In the end, the bibs themselves indicate what they lend themselves best to: coffee table, sofa, side table, chopping block, cutting board,...
VAN BOOM TOT MEUBEL
Vanuit een groot respect voor de natuur schenkt Howt een tweede leven aan bomen die noodgedwongen geveld werden. We werken niet met bomen speciaal geplant voor houtproductie, maar (stedelijke) lokale bomen die wegens ziekte, werken of groenbeheer niet langer kunnen blijven staan.
Na tientallen jaren groeien, geteisterd door de natuurelementen aan onze Belgische kust, lijkt de houtkachel of de versnipperaar ons geen respectvol einde voor deze prachtige wonderen der natuur. Liever zien we hen verder leven als tafel, zitbank, snijplank,...
Van boom tot meubel, bij Howt gebeurt alles in eigen beheer.
Het ganse proces start bij de boom zelf. Op het eerste zicht geeft de boom al wat van z'n vorm bloot en kan begonnen worden om deze met de chainsawmill (mobiele zagerij) te verzagen in bruikbare houten planken: "slabs" of "cookies".
Dan kan het lange proces van drogen beginnen: afhankelijk van de houtsoort en -dikte kan het luchtdrogen maanden tot jaren duren. Na het luchtdrogen volgt nog een kuur in de "solar kiln", het luchtdroge hout zou immers nog scheuren en draaien eens het binnenshuis komt. Deze zonne-droogoven hebben we gebouwd naar een oud concept waarbij de zon alle energie voorziet om het hout droog genoeg te maken om er meubels mee te bouwen.
Eens het hout een vochtpercentage van 8-10% heeft is het bruikbaar als meubelhout en kan de creatie van een nieuw stuk beginnen. Een gat, een scheur, spalting,... alle 'imperfectheden' maken de slab nog zoveel interessanter en mooier. Uiteindelijk geven de slabs zelf aan waar ze zich het beste toe lenen: salontafel, zitbank, bijzettafel, hakblok, snijplank,...
